Mauser feeding issue
      #160124 - 08/05/10 08:32 AM

I have a Zastava Mauser action in 7x57. What the Americans call an Interarms, Mark X or a Whitworth, same action.

It feeds just fine - with spitzers.
But with round nose bullets it jams. The first bullet jams sideways the next one goes fine, the third one gets rammed to one side of the breech, the last one over the top...
Which disappoints me because it shoots 175 grain hornady RN extremely well with 48grains of H4831 (and thats a good solid load), and part of the attraction of the 7x57 for me is to shoot these bullets because for close range bushwork, they are devastating killers on stags.
It also do not feed 140g Round noses properly either, although I can ram them home - but it shaves a slice of lead off one side as it goes in.

What do you think can be done about this?

(I have mag followers from other actions in 8x57, I think of trying one of those...)

I have a very early Westley Richards in .318 WR that has the same issue with 250 gr Woodleighs. Did you find a solution? I don't want to shoot light pointy bullets.

Have a look at the 'Making it Feed' sticky in the Gunsmithing forum over at the Accurate Reloading forums.

That'll give you an idea on the work that needs to be done. Pretty common for Mauser type actions to need a bit of work to feed blunt RN's reliably. Even Win M70's, especially the .458WM ones.

There's bound to be a gunsmith in NZ that does this job well.

Gadge,
Thanks for the pointer to the thread. That is extraordinary and very helpful detailed information regarding the issue of round feeding problems. The photos too are just as needed.
