Left-handed Searcy Field Grade .450 Nitro
      #160110 - 08/05/10 01:12 AM

I recently received my left-handed Searcy Field Grade double
rifle with 26" barrels in .450 Nitro Express x 3 1/4". It is a beautiful rifle.
The wood is very nice and the stock fits well. The rifle is well finished
throughout and locks up like a bank vault. This rifle is a great value. This
is the first time I have enjoyed the luxury of left-handed triggers and a
stock with cast-on. Given the good fit and a cushy recoil pad, the rifle
is comfortable to shoot.

If weekend weather ever decides to cooperate, the next step is accuracy
testing, chronographing the Hornady factory ammo and developing loads
equivalent to the factory loadings.

Congratulations! It looks like a gem.

.450 NE is a great choice of caliber too.

I was a couple of months late in ordering a field grade from Butch. He stopped making field grade models the first of the year. His "Classic" model runs runs about 7K more than the field grade.

Nice looking rifle.

crkennedy1,

I tried out my new Searcy Field Grade .450 NE over the weekend as well. I fired 10 rounds using a standing rest comprised of a sandbag on top of a camera tripod. A second tripod, located 10 feet forward, held my chronograph.

Firing 6 Hornady DGX and 4 Hornady DGS factory loads resulted in a mean velocity of 2,116 fps. My rifle has 26" bbls. The Hornady box claims 2,150 fps in a 28" bbl.

The 10 rounds were within a 2" x 2" area. Accuracy will improve as I get used to the rifle.

Impact was 1 1/2" left and 2" high. I may be holding the bead too high in the Vee to see it better. I will move the rear sight 0.015" to the right before testing again.

Butch is going to send me a blank rear sight (no Vee cut) so I can try out an idea of mine. If the idea seems to have merit, I'll post the results and procedures.
