Getting Ready yet?
      #15977 - 19/06/04 10:31 PM

Anyone getting ready for the upcoming seasons? Where are you headed? I will be hunting The Colorado High country again in less than 3 months now. I have tuned my bow and have been parcticing several times a week. I shoot 3 groupsa of 5 arrows at 20,30,40,50 & 60 yards. By the time September omes around I will be more than ready. Then in October it is deer season here in PA

The hardest part of getting ready for Colorado is the physical training. Running a very steep 5 mile stretch 5-6 times a week along with morning runs of 2 miles daily. This gets harder every year as I approach 40 LOL. Once I am into it for s few weeks I feel fine. But those first few weeks are pure hell The off season makes me very lethargic Anyway, I am well into my routine now. Chasing elk should not be so bad.........and the motivation is there The hardest part is hiking, runnning, clawing & climbing into bow range...50 yards max for me, I prefer 40 & under.

Hey ironbuck,I put a post up about sore muscles.I been thinking about getting ready also.I allways say when ever hunting season is overwith it is time to practice for next year!!!
I usually shoot all year round because I love archery & the bow,but have had to slow it down some.I think i maybe getting some artheritus??
I have been shooting year round since 1979.I have shot a Cascade takedown custom60# pull for about 14yrs.Bow still shoots just as good as the day it was born!
I think I will try 55#.Did you get a elk last season? We hunt bear, deer & hog here in Georgia.I shoot fingers,no sights,& try to be as primitive as i can get by with.I do like tree stands & camo.Shoot 125 Thunderheads mostly.Keep at your workout you will be ready & then some by the time opening day gets here! Good Luck & Get a BIGGEN!!

No elk last year but I got a beauty the year before. I was into elk last year but getting into range was tough.

I have been thinking more and more about going traditional. I like teh idea of a light bow & no sights, just shooting instinctively. Like I didi as a kid. My next bow will most likely be a long bow or recurve.

Good luck to you as this season as well!

Yea,I shot a compound for years & then noticed one day that alot of game had been taken with just a stick & string& flint arrowheads.I felt it was more primitive & Trditional.About as far as i could or wanted to go was the recurve though.Fred Bear shot a recurve and that was good enough for me.I have always tried to copy his style the most and have used his image as a mentor, hero, sportsman,to be admired& to be responsiable. If i could ever be anything remotely close to what he has done for the good image of archery,I will be doing good.Besides i figure i could miss just as cleanly with a compound as a recurve.I can throw a rock or flip a fishing hook on the end of a rod at 25yards.I should be able to sling a arrow!!!
You know what i mean.
Get a nice traditional bow that you like & feels good, you will like it & learn it.You can switch back & forth also.I think a compound is far superior for long range shooting & Targets & low holding weight.Recurves and longbows are accurate & Deadly & fast!!!I think they look good to.....

I just finished my spring bear hunt and am now getting psyched for moose and bear in New Brunswick. I will take my bow but also a rifle in case I can't get close enough for bullwinkle to arrow him. NB's moose season is only 3 days long! Bear will definitly be archery.

Looking at Fred's photo, sure must have been a difficult hunt, look at how thick the alders are!
