Nice rifle - wonderful calibre and great chuck of walnut on it too. I'd be replacing that bolt mounted peep with a standard bolt keeper if it was mine. Thoughts of that sight digging into my face might prevent good shooting, but if it's useable in the upright postion and doesn't interfere with the scope's sight picture, I'd leave it. It does look pretty cool on there. My Swede M46 (m94 action) easily runs 270's at 2,300fps and 285's at 2,200fps. 232gr. Norma Vulcans and Oryx make 2,450fps. All shoot into a 2 1/2" group at 100 meters with same sight setting. Individual groups are 1" or better.
A 98 action in the same calibre would add around 100fps to those speeds - maybe more.

An original Oberndorf sporter in 9.3x57 AND with an African connection. Wonderful!! I'm jealous!
Thanks for sharing the story and the photos of the rifle!!!

Looking at the shape of the stock and checkering, barrel, and peep sight, I get the impression that this is a British made rifle built on a 1911 Oberndorf action. That explains the African connection. Are there any British proofs? Really nice rifle.

Well, even if it's not an original Oberndorf Mauser sporter (ie: the complete rifle was made by Mauser) it's still cool as hell!!!

I don't know if that stock is a replacement, but the short forend smacks of English made. It does look a bit heavy, though.

Oh darn it those Sportarget bolt tail peeps are nigh on impossible to find now. They also go for darned silly money when they do turn up. Lyman made one like it too.
The Parker-Hale ones an yes I see yours is marked AJP Bisley Works same company just a bit earlier are usally dovetailed in the firing pin nut. That's the first one I have seen sleeved over it and sweated on.
Really nice rifle you have there..
