Cracked Stocks on Merkels??
      #159267 - 21/04/10 07:04 AM

I've heard number of folks lately talking about stocks cracking on my beloved Merkels. Is there a design issue with these? Mostly on the high recoiling big boys.

Sounds like a rash of guys running their rifles in lead-sled devices and ruining them...

That would be my guess as well! I have two Merkel double rifles, and have had zero problem with the wood, but I don't shoot double rifles in a lead sled!

I had a crack between the stock pin and the action on a 470.
Would love to buy another and if I did I would look into bedding it.

If a firm are pumping out numerous big bore doubles, some will fail, even a H&H can fail sometimes.
The question is if the firm stands behind its product or not.

I have never liked the idea of using "Lead Sleds". Using them is like marksmanship on Viagra to me anyway and they can be hell on stocks. Any "Blitz" action gun stands a real good chance of being trashed with the first shot when parked on one of those contraptions

True.

Although Merkel really don't have a warranty.... the claimed 5 year warranty becomes void if you reload. Are there people that don't? With the cost of the "safari" ammunition as it is, I imagine everyone does.

I almost didn't buy my Merkel because of this, but just accepted in the end that I was buying a rifle without any warranty and was on my own. I've since had trigger work done, which probably also voids any remaining warranty... LOL.

Do other gunmakers have this policy?

Oh yeah, and what we look for in a nice piece of wood nowadays is decorative figuring, albeit with straight grain where it matters. A piece of wood like this may have all sorts of problems that can't be easily detected or seen. Another sacrifice we make when opting for beauty.
