The proof marks date the rifle between 1887 and 1903. These dates are consistent with the advent of the .500NE in the 1890's, and the proof marks are consistent with such a rifle.

It looks to have no finish left on the action and locks with evidence of former rust pitting and polishing. The high-gloss underlever is clearly re-blacked, as is the forend iron and certainly the barrels.

Other than these observations, the photos provide no further detail. I doubt the bores are "like new".

If the bores are good and serviceable, the ribs still tight, the wood sound with no cracks or oil saturation, and if the rifle is tight and on the face I would say it would retail for about $7,500 in the U.S. That's a wild guess, because the photos are grossly insufficient to evaluate the rifle. Only an end-user should pay that amount, not a re-seller.

It looks like a hard-used working gun that's been tarted up for sale.

JMHO

Normally a seller places a price on his wares and doesn't ask others to do so.

Curl

P.S. I just looked again to see if it has rebounding locks but cannot tell positively. They look like they may be non-rebounding locks. If so, the rifle will sell for less than I have just said.

Curl,
1887, I would think the hammers are rebounding.

Mike I agree. I participate in auctions in the UK and USA every year, and similar guns do not sell for what other members are posting as estimates. I agree with Curl the owner should be pricing his own gun, not us.

The markets differ a bit from around the globe as we all know, I am surprised to hear other members placing such high estimates on this piece. Wes e-mailed me back this AM, he came in at $5,500 he said that was probably on the high end but requested more detailed photos for a more accurate est.

These are just opinions of course, albeit some of us are professional hunters, collectors, even auction department leaders as Wes, etc. A gun is worth what someone is willing to pay obviously, with that said I would advise selling it to one of the members here that feels its worth more than others.

3G max in London. I personally don't think it would come near.

Well I can't really tell s__t from the photos. I certainly would only use the auction results as a guideline as I don't know anything about those guns specifically either. The owner needs to set a price and justify it.

What am I missing here? A full nitro .500 under 10K??!! I believe some of you discount hammer guns beyond the logical. If this was a boxlock what
would it bring?

I don't think it's configuration that's holding the value back on this one.
The eyes of my wallet see condition issues.

Also, does anyone have a good explanation for those milled pockets in the action flats?
Are the proofs period of the claimed date of manufacture or do they suggest a later proof for cordite?

Cheers

the milled pockets in the flats are made to reduce action weight, it were done on quite a few Jones underlever rifles.

I've seen milled pockets in action flats before too, just never so crude on a rifle with such a high-grade maker.
Also -- lighten the action on a 500 nitro?

Just looks out of character on this rifle, whether it's from the maker or not.
