I tried an atlatl once but it was a lot more primitive and smaller than the ones on that site. You would be surprised by the reach that they have.

It looks very much like an aboriginal woomera with a hinged socket on the end to seat the dart in.
The dart appears to be a spear with flights on it for accuaracy ? and to stabilize it in flight.
