Square Bridge type G

I just picked up this unusual 8X60 magnum Mauser square bridge from ca. 1931 (chambered in 8X60 Magnum - not a magnum length action).
Got this one from Cabelas - listed as a postwar custom sporter...
Huvius - 2 / Cabelas - 0

Anyway, Dons has shed some light on this gun for me and has identified it as a typeG.
The forend shape may not be original but the rest of the rifle is in pretty good shape. It is similar to some "African" models I have seen but with a 24" barrel.
It has rings too and a modern Leupold scope.

Really a very nice rifle and in good shape too. I would agree , that the foreend may have been altered.
The position of the schnabel near the front panel grip shows the typical configuration of a Stutzen(= full-) stock .In the case of the Type G-Rifles for a 24 inch barrel .

Whereas the African Type L with the longer barrels shows the schnabel on the tip of the forend.

Is the barrel full octagon or octagon to round ?

JC,
It is a full octagon barrel.
I agree that the only African models I have seen - in pictures mind you, never held one - have had a smooth stock contour up to the tip which is normally a schnabel of some sort. There is one shown in Speed's book with a tip that just curves up to the barrel though too.
Mauser did show an illustration in their catalog of an African rifle with a "double" schnabel - the first being about five inches behind the front sling swivel pretty much like this rifle.

If i remember right, i have seen a gl.rasch with that foreend, but it had sidepanels also.

Huvius,

Very nice! Even if it is probably not original, the forend has been esthetically shaped by whoever modified it.

Good hunting!

I have seen something like that on a custom post-war sporter, where it was called an 'African fore-end'. I think the idea was that, in gripping just behind the rear protrusion, it helped reduce recoil to the shoulder.

The sling swivel was in front of that, of course.

Have you looked at the sporter illustrated on Page 541 of Speed's "The Mauser Archive"? From what I can tell from your photos, your rifle bears a good deal of resemblance to it.

I don't have that book.
I'll look into it.
