Mate,
wulyu kamunta

Try Wright's "Shooting the British Double Rifle" book on reloading for black powder. I have an Alex Henry 500/450 3 1/4 Magnum B.P.E. Generally I just load it to the top of the case with FFg (I think) and compress the charge as the 350 grain cast or jacketed pill (Hornady) is seated. Otherwise Wright suggests 70 grains of Mulwex (locally made but sold in the US as Hogdon (?) with dacron filler. The Henry shoots 3 into 1 inch at 50 metres.Watch out for tropical climates as you should reduce the charge accordingly. Good on Banteng and Sambar (in Arnhem Land)and does it hit! Strong puurri!!!

If your rifle is a Henry Patent Falling Block, it will almost certainly have Henry rifling, in which case IMO, you would be best advised to use correctly sized paper-patched cast lead projectiles. Jacketed pills can work in Henry rifling, but you have to be very carefull what you use, particularly in .450 calibre, since a lot of pills in that size are very hard, being intended for .458 Win. Mag.

As " kamilaroi" says, get a copy Graeme Wright's book, it takes the mystery out of all this.

A casefull of Fg, preferably Swiss no.5, and the appropriate bullet - usually a bog-standard .459, which can either be a GG bullet or a PP bullet. Actually, the load data should be on the barrel - 120grs of powder, X grains of bullet. When in doubt, slug the bore - and DON'T shoot Jacketed stuff in that rifle! you'll wear out the rifling in no time!
