What cartridge is this?
      #156332 - 13/03/10 06:22 AM

I have a 577/500 #2 that has been shot and reformed in a double at some time.

What is it if not the no.2?

The original No.2 on the right.

there is another 577/500 31/4 BP magnum express iirc, maybe your cartridge was shot in such a rifle

I have seen more than one old gun that had a mis-shaped chamber. The 38-40 rifle/pistol cartridge comes to mind. They often blow the shoulder forward just like yours. I suggest this may be the correct cartrige identification, despite the mis-located shoulder.

The name of it's big brother is 577/500 Magnum 3 1/8"
I'm getting ready to load for one now. If you post some of the measurments I'll compare them to what I have for the fired brass.

Have you compared this one to the 577/450 for the OAL and shoulder placment? Possibly it is a 50 caliber wildcat?

The shoulder is a bit furher back on this one and steeper.

Yeah, i start to think so also. At some time thay cleaned the chamber by removing some metal.

The 577/450 has an even longer neck than the 577/500, so thats probably not it. Could be a wildcat but i was thinking it could have been an early german cartridge.

The guns I have examined were made that way. I don't know why.

They were doing all sorts of crap with chambers in the early express cartridge period.

Is this a Birmingham rifle?
NA&A was doing virtually a 'magnum cartridge of the week' during the 70's and 80's

Consider whatever shape/dimensions there as 'period cool' and run the hell out of it.
