Hi first post and first ?. I have a chance to pickup a 1909 Mauser 3006 for 250.00 US. The barrell has been cut to 21 inches I haven't seen it as yet its in the paper. Is this a good price or over priced?

Thanks TomN

Tom-

First things first, welcome to the site!

On the rifle, there is no telling of value without at the very least some detailed images of specifically the rifle that's being offered.

It's possible that it's not worth a dollar - it could be worth more than the two-fifty you say it's listed for.
Photos will help, otherwise it's anyone's guess.

Cheers

The action alone is worth over $100.00 - if it's in good shape and complete.

You need to ask yourself if the rest of the gun is worth $150.00.

Consider this - to buy a blank, contoured barrel, thread and chamber is about $400.00 to $600.00 + the cost of an action + the cost of a stock, sights, etc.

If a gun has a descent bore, is relatively clean & functioning, it is usually worth $250.00, in any big game calibre.

You really need to see the gun first, as Tinker said.

This rifle is a 1909 Argentine mod. 98 with a cut down barrell I still haven't seen it as yet. I was thinking of building a 404 but I think that it would take to much work and money to put that round in a std, 98 action. So I guess that I will pass. Thanks for the replais to my ?

I would take a good look at it first before turning it down.
Don't forget, the 1909 Argentine is one of the favorite actions of many custom builders - and for good reason.
If the action itself is in good condition and has the hinged floorplate with the trigger bow release as it should, I would think the action alone is worth the asking price.
IMO, a 1909 is a great choice for a 404.

The action, if in good condition, is worth well over the asking price.

Considering actions are very expensive these days, perhaps I was a wee bit Scottish in my value estimation of the action - or behind the times - as usual. The last 98 bolt body, stipped, that I bought cost $80.00. The last whole action was 20 years ago and that was $100.00 - come to think about it.
