Special Everglades python-hunting season created

This ought to drop the price of Seminole hatbands and such.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has announced the opportunity for hunters to access state-managed lands around the Everglades in order to capture and remove reptiles of concern.

The specially created season will take place March 8 to April 17, after the close of small game season in the Everglades and Francis S. Taylor, Holey Land, and Rotenberger wildlife management areas.

"We are once again engaging our stakeholders, in this case, the hunting community, to help us reduce the number of reptiles of concern in the Everglades," said FWC chairman Rodney Barreto. "Our hunters are on the front lines, and we hope, by tapping into their knowledge of the Everglades, we can make significant progress in this effort."

Hunters must possess a valid hunting license and pay a $26 management area permit fee to hunt the regions for pythons, green anaconda and Nile monitor lizards, all invasive species that are threatening native wildlife. The reptiles may not be removed from the wildlife management areas alive.

Nelson, Have you ever seen any of these snakes listed out in the swamp? Are they that common?

I've also read of cases where airport workers who had to deal with siezed illegal shipments felt sorry for the animals sitting on the tarmac in their crates and released them. In one other case, a man came home from work and found an 11 foot plus king cobra in his garage. Grabbed a shotgun, killed it, called the sheriff and a taxidermist. The snake turned out to have escaped fron a neighbor who had taken it to a vet and had it devenomized. Owner was obviously irate about the situation($900 snake, $500+ surgery), but a venomless cobra is still a cobra, and the shooter was ruled to have been well within his rights. I'd have done the same thing-I like snakes but if a deadly species shows up in my home, especially when the closest antivenom is in a zoo 9 hours away, the snake dies before I get bit-if I can kill it from a safe distance.

MIAMI (May 15) -- In the cool morning air of the Florida Everglades, Mitch Schall slowly steered his pickup truck along the levies in search of exotic, deadly prey.

A veteran alligator hunter who converts the reptiles' tough hides into handbags and wallets, Schall wasn't seeking his usual quarry. Rather, he was on the hunt for Burmese and African rock pythons, snakes that have no natural business living among these tall grasses and muddy waters.

I've read the article, and see that you have a serious problem at hand..

But:

"Schall and the other python hunters are at a distinct disadvantage in that they cannot kill the snakes outright, but must trap them -- by hand or whatever nonlethal means they can devise -- and deliver them to wildlife officials, who will euthanize them by injection.
"

That's just too stupid to be funny... you can't shoot 'em????

I wouldn't even touch such an animal... I'd be blasting away with my shotgun

Simple. Catch it alive and decide it's your pet. Then decide it needs to be put down because it's too dangerous. In most states a pet owner can euthanize his own animal using any humane means, including shooting.
