Well, I've decided to take the plunge. A double is now firmly in my future.

About the only one I can afford is the Merkel, but am open to suggestions.

Brand new Merkel 140A, 470NE

wide V rear sight (Recknagel)

silver front sight with flip up moon sight (Recknagel)

english pistol grip

All up $10500

Any other suggestions or knowledge of other available rifles for similar money, most welcome

Hi Controlled Feed,

That sounds like a real good choice, are you getting it from Granite Arms from stock already here or are you getting it made to suit ?? the reason I ask is that if your getting it made for you consider getting the shotgun barrels at the same time and maybe a timber upgrade. If you have a look on the Merkel website it will give you an idea of the grades but not prices.

I don't know the price as a comparison but I looked at the "Zoli" website and they too have a great selection. I know that this may sound silly but if you and some "Friends / Contacts" and done a "Group" purchase there may be a financial saving for all. This is a typical Yank idea but it works.

Anyway, irrespective of my waffling, good luck with your purchase and I hope that it sees the Dark Continent and brings you a lot of joy.

I must ask, you said "Well, I've decided to take the plunge. A double is now firmly in my future." Does the wife know ??? Just joking....

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

I don't think there is a smilie for frustration and anxiety, but I need one.

The more research I do on doubles the worse it becomes.

What can y'all tell me about the information I'm getting about Merkels coming loose after not many shots? I have heard it and read it enough times in the last week for it to be a bit off putting.

Given that they are similar money, how do the Searcy doubles stack up against a Merkel (damn you Butch Searcy for not making the Field Grade any more) I may have found a 2nd hand Searcy for sale in Oz, but I have misgivings about buying a 2nd hand double, given that it's not hard to damage one.

The chappy at Granite Arms has been very helpful, but the first thing he told me when I rang him was that Merkel will not honour their warranty if you use reloads. WTF Do you spend a good wad of cash on a couple of hundred factory rounds and hope that any thing that is going to go wrong will do so in those first couple of hundred rounds, or reload from the start and hope nothing goes wrong.

My money tree never grew so I have to sell about 6 rifles that have been hibernating in my safe to buy this damn thing, don't want to sell them but if I want I double......bye bye.

Any words of wisdom.

There's absolutely nothing to that old rumor. I was worried about the same thing when I bought my Merkel .500NE and set out to shoot it as much as I could shoot during the first year, hoping to destroy it if possible. No dice.

In fact, I have never seen a modern day Merkel off face.

You get your Merkel, and you will fire perhaps 1000 rounds before it will close without pushing the lever to the left.

This is an interesting point.

I have just read the warranty, supplied by Merkel in Germany, and it DOES NOT specifically exclude the use of handloaded ammunition, it does exclude the use of "reused" ammunition. So as long as you use new brass you should be covered. This is still a significant saving over commercial ammunition, but more expensive than I want it to be.

However, you must use CIP authorised ammunition. From what I have read any ammunition sold in Europe must be CIP approved. To comply it must carry a CIP approval number. Interestingly, Norma ammunition sold in Australia carries no such approval number, nor any mention of CIP approval on it's packaging.

This could be interpreted two ways...

1. It is impossible to comply with the warranty requirements, i.e. CIP approved ammunition, so the warranty restrictions are not valid. i.e. contrary to trade practices act.

or possibly...

2. Since CIP has no jurisdiction outside Europe then this warranty requirement is invalid, i.e. contrary to the trade practices act.

or..... I could be wrong. I'm not a lawyer.

It also might be that another warranty comes with the rifle that is different from the warranty supplied to me by email from Merkel in Germany. My Merkel is still in lock-up, awaiting the end of 28 days so I'm not sure what paperwork will be included with it.

Thoughts?

UPDATE: Duh! Norma is made in Sweden and Sweden isn't a CIP Member State. So they are not required to comply with CIP certification except for ammunition that they sell in to a CIP Member State. It makes sense that they wouldn't pay for CIP testing for ammunition sold in Australia. So guys.... if you are using Norma ammunition in your Merkel, the stuff it was regulated with, then you have voided your warranty.

Thats correct. There not commonly done but not unheard of either. I think they look and perform well on a double. Have owned several set up this way.
