Some good cheap double rifle practice
      #15477 - 03/06/04 12:17 PM

I'm off overseas at the end of June (to Kangaroo Island) for the weekend for a bit of double rifle practice with the .450.

A spot of island pig hunting - if I find or see any - and lots of practice on wallabies and roos. The landowner has destruction permits for endless numbers of the beggers.

Better than a piece of paper or a milk jug I think.

I should think so! Live critters are much better to whack than paper any day. You know you're going to have to post lots of pics.

Are you just taking the one rifle? A friend of mine was part of a small group that culled about 600 deer on a small island. He had to keep switching firearms because the barrels were getting too hot. It also got boring pretty fast so he switched to just head shots. Have a good time.

{i]Kangaroo Island is on the South Coast, roughly centrally between East and West.

Adam

As you can see from the map which is added above, Kangaroo Island is not a small island. The property I will be hunting on is only about 2000 acres and is near a large National Park in the West of the Island. They have nomadic pigs in the area which hopefully will be around when I am there. I hope to bring back some pork from the trip.

I want to take my .450 but will also take a shotgun and a BLR in .308. Plus my .222. Roos are quite easily killed with a centrefire. The .22/250 to .243 is probably the ideal calibres for the work but I'm aiming to practice for pigs and buff later in the year in the NT. If the property works out I hpe to revisit and next time may take a 6.5x55 with 90-100 gr HPs.

Roos, Euros (smaller kangaroos - also known as a Wallaroo) and wallabies (again smaller than a roo and a euro) make excellent practice especially moving - hoping targets. Good for swinging practice!

Permits are issued to farmers for harvest or destruction by wildlife authorities if the numbers are shown to be seriously detrimental to crops, pastures etc. This property is reported to have lots and also has the necessary permits. These permits IMO are quite ridiculous as they are destruction only permits. You are not permitted to remove the carcase from the property and have to leave the animal rot. A real waste!

Other permits are issued with 'tags' which allow a professional shooter to take and harvest the roos usually for pet meat processing. Usually shot at night with spotlights.

The deer that were culled had to be left as well. There was no sense selling it to raise funds for conservation projects.

Can you tell me why roos are pit lamped?

Some information on Kagaroo Island.

Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island, 155 kilometres long and up to 55 kilometres wide, some 4500 kilometres square.

I pinched the info below from a tourist website but added some bits myself. Work out which these are.

Getting To Kangaroo Island
Daily flights operate from Adelaide Airport to Kingscote, and take approximately 30 minutes. A passenger and vehicle ferry departs daily from Cape Jervis, a 90 minute drive south of Adelaide.

Climate and Conditions
Relatively mild conditions are experienced during both summer and winter, typical of island climates. At times, cool ocean breezes make windproof clothing necessary, but central areas of the Island can experience warmer temperatures.

Average Jan Feb Mar Apr May June July Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
Max ° C 24 24 22 20 17 15 15 15 17 19 21 22
Min ° C 15 15 14 13 11 9 8 8 9 10 12 14

General Information
Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island stretching 155 kilometres long and 55 kilometres wide. Having been separated from the mainland during the last ice age, Kangaroo Island is a true wilderness, and 30% of the island is protected as conservation and national parks. Many plants and animals existing on the Island are no longer found elsewhere.

The high season for Kangaroo Island is between October to May.

To explore the island, plan to stay 3 days, or if possible a week. You will be able to:

See wildlife in their natural surroundings by day and night
Learn about the turbulent history of Kangaroo Island
Explore caves
Taste local produce
Hunt and kill pigs and pesty roos
Relax and revitalise
Self-drive is a popular option, and Best Of Kangaroo Island is able to provide you with an enjoyable itinerary to suit your needs.

Maybe you would prefer to gain a deeper understanding of the Island's history and ecology by joining a 4WD tour. At Best Of Kangaroo Island we are able to provide you with details of many options available to you.

The accommodation choices include hotels, self-contained accommodation, farm stays, and bed and breakfast establishments.

Back from the weekend. Picked the wettist and stormyist weekend for a while. Proved to be a fun weekend and good as a scouting trip for the future.

Some photos of the general trip to follow soon.
