Cases and accessories

I do like seeing photos of the cases that many of these fine rifles came with, but I have a question....

What accessories are normally carried with the rifle in these cases?

There often appears to be what look like brass scale weights, but I'm guessing that they may be bottles.... I'd love to see a list (with pictures) from some of your cases.

Is it normal (if not legal) to carry a box or two of ammunition in the case?

phil

Nowadays, Oak and Leather cases are more for looks than for travel. They should include an assortment of turn screws that are sized to fit the gun. They should contain a bottle of oil and maybe some lube or even vaseline. A couple of snap caps, maybe a pouch with some cleaning accessories. The cleaning rods would be stored under the barrels.

I would guess whether or not you can carry ammunition in a case with the firearm would depend on where you were. In the US you can travel with both if the ammo is in an protective case.

Not beautiful at all unless you like a shiny silver double case, but my Fortress double rifle/shotgun case is what I would use today. Not for show, but locks up well and is strong.

The old lovely double rifle cases nowadays need another case around them to protect them as well if travelling!

Gents:
From my limited experience it seems the older the case and rifle the more "stuff" was in the case. I'm sure this was due to the length of hunting trips in the old days and how long the trip was back to the gunsmith. Many old cases I have seen have a complete set of reloading implements and bullet mould(s), complete cleaning accessories, and spare parts such as main springs, strikers, front sight, complete locks (for sidelock and droplock rifles), as well as ammunition. On the inside of the case lid was the maker's trade label and charging and load data.

An interesting side line to these old rifles is to trace the shipping and transit company labels that may remain on the exterior of the oak and leather cases. It is also possible to buy stock certificates from these old companies (gun makers, shipping lines, importers to India and Africa as well as south east Asia).

These things are really cool.
Regards,
Cal
