That bullet does look interesting.

Thank you Curl

I think for those of us who haven’t had the ‘privilege’ if we could call it that, of seeing OSR for ourselves, your explanation is quite simple and clear. You used the term “deform” in your post and then also have confirmed that it seems in some cases barrel joining ribs have been loosened from the possible stretching effect on the barrel metal.

Trying to think outside the square, I put forward a theory in an earlier post that perhaps OSR is not a deformation (if I use your term) of the barrel metal but a heat effect on the barrel surface. I happily accept this theory is not the answer from the explanation that you have provided.

Next question! In your experience or opinion, once OSR has appeared does it get worse over time i.e. if carrying on using the same loads that possibly caused OSR to appear in the first place, is the next stage over time likely to be loosened ribs?
I suppose most users pull up and review the bullets they are using but if there are examples of loosened ribs then these users have obviously carried on oblivious to the OSR developing on their firearm, unless of course the OSR was so severe and loosened the ribs with the first few rounds using the ‘offending’ bullets.

I suppose I’ll just stick to the old Mauser 404 and worry like hell every time I loose off a shot that the bolt doesn’t blow out from my ‘lengthened’ standard action. Then again I have the fantastically accurate cast bullet load for it which should see the barrel last for ever.

Eagle

This is from memory and was on AR at one time - someone may be able to confirm.

I think their was a guy who had a Chapuis who used monos (Barnes from memory) where the ribs came loose. Gun was sent for repair and he was told not to use Barnes bullets.

End result was that he used them again, same thing happened
and the gun was repaired a second time.

From memory it was the second time it was in for repair they asked him what he uses, and told him to stop using it.

At that point they would have to come up with something to blame. Not saying the bullets wasnt to blame but as all craftsmen would have done, to try to find something else then your own work to point a finger at.

Dunno about that - I reckon Chapuis make a pretty good gun
and have been doing it long enough to know what is what.

You shouldt take for granted that it was sent back home for repair.

I once had some Firestone tires that threw chunks of rubber out of the centre of the tread. I guess that either means that all Firestone tires do that, or maybe all car tires do that. Too - that was 35 years ago, but materials and design doesn't make any difference, does it?
The fact that I was doing "Breakies" at 130 mph in a squad car doesn't matter does it?

Same deal here. Used to be solid mono's. Aren't now. Big difference between banded and smooth.
Perhaps the bullets were oversize to the gun's dimensions - doens't matter, does it?

btw, why not include rhino, they are solid copper at the base and without any bands.

Funny no one has experienced problem with those.
