the best 4x4 i have ever owned or used is an old mercedes unimog 1962 model404 it eats toyotas ,landrovers, or any other so called 4x4s which are hopeless compared to this thing its not fast or woman friendly , but goes anywhere you point it ,with coil suspension ,16 inches of ground clearance ,difflocks from factory ,super low gearing, what more do you want ?

Mate,

any photos??? As I like zer cherman autos viz: pinzgauer etc I finished up with a locally built VW "country buggy" super low gearing, 1835cc engine, locking diff etc BUT 2WD, however light enough to push out of bogs, bulldust holes etc at 1080KG fully fuelled.

I suppose your local VW is a "Thing" type 181/182.Is there much info on these and any recommendations for off road modifications/improvements in general?

Might a moderator open this up to general discussion/ new topic etc.

regards

K

kos

An engineer acquaintance in Zambia had one or two unimogs set up as safari "cars". Looked like damned good vehicles for their hunting expeditions.

After fixing them for years now, I hate them! They will go anywhere but over-engineered to the max! Could be waaay simpler.
