Brass for 577 2 3/4 Nitro Express ??
      #15266 - 28/05/04 12:03 AM

Is brass available for a 577 2 3/4 inch NE? Can it be made from the 3 inch flavor?

What quality is the brass?

And, what is the COL for this cartridge?

I am eye'ing a 577 NE on a Mauser action.

Thanks,

RobertD

Bertram brass in this size is pretty good. I've shot
and reloaded it a lot. It comes in 3" but a quick trim
and a sizing die fix that. Cases are pricey. Huntingtons
sells Bertrams for $83.00 for 20.
COL: 2.740"
If you can find any of the older BELL cases, they are
almost everlasting.
Interesting cartridge for a Mauser. I'd like to see that.

You're an extremely lucky guy. There are enough guys out there who have used Bertram brass and was totally dis-satisfied with the product. Dimensions can be off, rims can be too thick or thin, neck splitting after only one load, brass not fitting the chamber after re-sizing, etc. My experience with Bertram brass was not too good to say the least. I got some brass for a 475 Jeffery's No.2 for my partner's dad to do some reloading as his supply of Kynoch ammo was exhausted. I encountered overly thick rims and have had the brass not fit the chamber after re-sizing. I had to beg some other dealer for some BELL brass and the problem was solved. But then again, I've heard of some who have had problems with BeLL brass also. It's a coin toss as to when your turn is up for shit happening to you.

For the .577 2 3/4, I would get some Horneber brass from www.huntingtons.com (or special order if necessary). More than half of the Bertram 600 NE brass I had would not even fit into my chamber. I had the same problem with about 20% of my 500 NE cases. The 600 NE were basically garbage, but I was able to file down the rims of the 500 NE to make them fit. But Horneber 600 NE worked every time. And Bell 500 NE was perfect.

Add to that the fact that Bertram is the most expensive brass out there, and I see no reason to mess with it.

Second everyone else here on the sad state of Bertram Brass. Total loack of any quality control. I think he should do fewer cases and do them better.

I use BeLL on both my 3" and 2 3/4"

Wow! Thanks for the info guys.

So the 577 NE 2 3/4 can be simply trimmed from the 3 inch flavor? That makes it rather easy.

Next question (now that my curiosity is peaked):

What is the difference in velocity between the two?

Is the COL of the longer cartridge? another 1/4 inch?

I haven't found loading data yet, but it appears that a 750 grain bullet is typical.

The 2 3/4 came with either the 750 grain at 1800 or the 650 at 1950fps. The 750 grn. 3" is at 2050. The overall length is 1/4 with the 750 and about 3/8ths with the 650.
