Gotta brag on my friend - new custom .375 H&H rifle
      #152509 - 02/02/10 04:38 AM

My good friend and gunsmith Todd Johnson has a rifle he built featured in the 2nd edition of Dangerous Game Rifles by Terry Wieland. I thought I'd share a photo from the book with you guys. Todd built the rifle for Terry.

I gotta say I'm right proud of the boy!!!! He done good!

And lest you think his skills are limited to the big bore Mauser type rifles...

Todd has worked over a couple of rifles for me (not nearly as many as he has for Bob) and I'm glad to see him getting some recognition for it. Probably makes my waiting time that much worse though!

Oh heck!!! I forgot all about that AR-15!!! Thanks for posting that link! I got a chance to handle that rifle a few times while Todd was working on it but I never got a chance to see the finished rifle.

Here's another link with an article about it:

http://www.shootingtimes.com/gunsmithing/ST_makingamaster_201003/index.html

"Todd Johnson took the match-grade metal parts supplied by Rock River Arms, the best-quality Asian walnut supplied by Bill Dowtin, and turned them into a custom AR-15 the likes of which has never before been seen, and which is to be auctioned off to benefit the NSSF."

Cheers!

Todd did a wonderful job, Bob. I do appreciate the stain on the maple stock. Left blonde and oiled just doesn't turn my crank, but when stained to bring out the striped figure, they are special indeed.

My brother and a bunch of other longrifle makers are using Aqua-fortis (nitric sollution) then flaming it to bring out the figure. It is a stain that goes deep and will not 'wear' or leach as most do. Over the years, Taylor has used just about all of the good stains, but has now settled on Aqua-fortis as being about the best.

Regarding the AR-15, then yeah me too. But, it was a project for Shooting Times magazine that Terry wanted to do so Todd did the work.

I agree with you. But I've never seen anything quite like it, and I'm glad to see Todd getting some broad exposure through that project.

This rifle turned out spectacular. I had a chance to handle it when it was just roughed out and all metal still in the white. I could see and feel then it was going to be a very useful rifle.

If you go to the http://www.lone-star-armory.com/ web site and click on Photos, Husqvarna Model 46 9.3x57 Mauser, you can see the rifle he worked for me.
A very simple but nice 1894 action husqvarna that he worked over the stock (had a nice crack behind the tang), glassed, smoothed, finished, custom two position side swing safety and left the cock on closing. I wanted the classic look to remain. He then adjusted the bolt handle to clear the scope and mounted the bases and rings. He then mounted my 2-7 leupold scope.
I have taken it on one hunt. It performed flawlessly. I didn't. I've got to learn LEAD when the hog is running full boar (pun intended). Those 286 grain bullets do kick up a lot of South Texas dirt!

Sounds like an intersting book too.
Pass my regards to Todd from me in Alaska.
