1925 Savage 1899 (takedown) .250-3000 caliber
      #152300 - 31/01/10 06:44 AM

Hello Everyone

Happy New Year.

My father recently purchased a 1925 takedown Savage 99 in .250-3000 caliber (pics below). I wanted to get opinions for special loads that can be custom made for this caliber for quarry the size of a wild boar. Also suggest some custom ammunition makers in US.

You need to know that the Model 99 take-down version was notoriously inaccurate. To quote Col. Towsend Whelen "the Dean of American Riflemen", "This rifle (a Model 99) was given to me, probably about 1915, by Pascal de Angeles, then the sales manager of Savage. It was originally a takedown barrel, and would not shoot worth a hill of beans. I finally sent it to Niedner and had him fit a .250-3000 barrel with a 10-inch twist, screwed in solid, had Griffin & Howe restock it and fitted it with a Belding & Mull scope....I experimented with it with a number of loads, and it was the first rifle I ever shot which I got a number of minute of angle groups. I mean 10-shot groups, for that was the only kind of groups we shot in those days."

In his book "The American Rifle" written in 1920, Col.(then Maj.) Whelen refers to the Model 99, "The rifle is made in both solid frame and take-down styles, the former being always preferable on account of its much better accuracy."

I have a Model 99 takedown in .22 Savage High Power, which had already been converted to a fixed barrel before I bought it. While not perhaps shooting "like a house afire", it does group respectably and has accounted for its share of white tail deer.

A take-down Model 99 is not a hopeless case, but it does need some attention to realize its full potential.

What a classic!

And Xausa...I love reading your posts. Brings back memories of my childhood and reading of the wonders of powderburning. Guys with batteries like yours are the ones that got me in the shootin' and huntin' game.

nice gun indeed.
I have had a .22HP in a TD 1899 model. It was hopelessly inaccurate. The gun I had was in a mint condition. As a former winchester collector I did have always had a softspot for the Savage 1895+1899 rifles. If I one day come a cross a 32-40 or 38-55 with oct barrel, solid frame, I`ll take it....

Thanks for sharing.

I see a couple of problems with this...without a ballistics table in front of me, my recollection is that the .250-3000 Savage is solidly in the middle of the 25-caliber spectrum (more powerful than the .256, .25-20, and .25-35 Winchesters but less powerful than the .25-06 and .257 Roberts) and I don't think you're going to find much in the way of bullets that exceed 120-grains or so. Assuming you can get some loads worked up that are significantly faster than the original load, or shoot bullets that aren't close to the weight of the original load, the sights will be worthless as they were regulated to the loads of the period. Over many years of shooting pre-war Winchesters I've run into this problem enough to learn that lesson...and also to learn that the original loads are still plenty good for hunting most game animals.

I'd encourage you to take it on a hog hunt with whatever factory ammo it likes; I'd probably start with the Winchester load but I'm partial to Silvertip bullets in the old lever action rounds.

While I can't speak for the Savages, I can tell you I've owned many takedown Winchesters that were absolutely as accurate as their solid-frame counterparts. One in particular, a deluxe takedown Model 1895 in .30-'03, is frighteningly accurate with 220-grain "factory duplication" loads- more accurate than the vast majority of bolt actions I've ever owned. That may be a function of the Savage takedown design or differences in manufacturing, etc. but don't assume it's not a shooter until you've tried it out with the loads it was designed to shoot.

The real difficulty with heavier bullets in the .250 Savage is that the twist used on factory barrels was 14", compared to 10" for the contemporary .257 Roberts. Consequently, the Roberts cartridge will stabilize much heavier bullets than the .250 Savage. A 117 grain bullet intended for the .257 is almost guaranteed to fail to stabilize in your rifle.

Frankly I'm happy with 87 and 100 grain within 200 yards. (but a 257AI Roberts will do it as far out as I care: zeroed at 300)

Thank you guys for the helpful and informative responses. I hope the rifle is accurate but again as xausa and taw1126 have suggested the accuracy of the rifle will be decided after shooting a few rounds out of it. I think for now I will stick with Winchester .250 savage loads and see how it performs with them. Will share the results after the test.
