416 Rem Mag Brass Shortage
      #152150 - 29/01/10 04:03 PM

G'day all,

The poofters at Remington quit making their 416 Rem Mag brass a few weeks ago, without any notice. When I wrote them they basically told me to get stuffed.

There is a place in the states called Arms and Ammo that has some - they jacked the price up.

Jamison just finished a 100,000 piece run for Cor-Bon. Interesting to see what they load it with.

Dieter Horneber makes it in Germany. Reimar Johannsen has it for their normal highway robery rates.

I asked Huntingtons to import some frrom Horneber; that will drop the price a bit.

There is still a little Bell brand floating around here and there. Very inconsistent quality - soft. I know; I bought some. Good for cast bullet loads over A 5744 at 1,800fps.

Just for giggles I made some out of Hornady Basic Belted Brass. Works Brilliantly.

I asked Jamison and Hornady to consider making the brass; I believe Jamison will beat Hornady out the gate. Jamison's latest brass has been very good quality.

I will keep this news updated.

Thanks,

lawndart

I don't get it. Did Remington just abandon this cartridge. I see no Remington ammunition offered in this caliber either.

This is how Remington has been doing 'work' for many years. those with .22, 6mm and .30 BR's know the story well. There are a number of other calibres similar things have happened to - no fan-fair just a drying up of ammo supplies.

The .416 is easily replaced by any .375H&H or .450 Lott brass. It's standard size makes for a continuing supply.

I just bought a case of 416 Rem. factory ammo in 400 gr A-Frames from Boise Gun shop. They said they have had it for a while so they sold it to me for $70 a box--so I took the entire case--have used it before in one of my .416's and it shoots 1" or under at 100 yds...plus it is basically the same POI as the 400 gr Barnes solids I load up..very useful combo..

Also checked one of our local gun shops here--they had about 200 pieces of brass in the shop now--bought them yesterday...

I called Midway and they told me they were showing that a shipment was allegedly heading their way sometime in the next 6 to 8 weeks..I inquired as to Remington no longer making it and she said it didnt show it was discontinued like it normally does when a manufacturer does so...

While the Hornady Basic Brass works well, you might want to find some 8mm Rem. Mag. brass to use instead.

Since it's inception, the 8mm Rem. Mag. has not been too successful a round (in marketing only). Because of this, you can usually find that dealers want to get rid of the brass at low prices.

True, you won't have the correct headstamp info, but you will find that this brass loads even easier than the Hornady Basic stuff.
