Good point, Martin - I've never used a roll crimp, as I've noted - somewhere.

I've always used a folded or partically folded crimp.

The early 'punkin balls' shotshell loads of the 1920's through 1950's, used a .640" or .650" ball. They were VERY small, and I'm pretty sure, a rolled crimp was used. Even if the bal rode over the crimp, the wads would push it out, I suspect. I also suspect no damage would occur. The groosly undersided balls, coupled with them sitting on a hard card wad which allowed them to bounce down the bore, contributed to their misserable accuracy.

I thought it would be good to resurect this thread again as spring is coming and shooting my 12 bores is on my mind.

I need to get the address for the roll crimp die maker from Alberta, from Smoke - if he sees this, please post it - again, smoke.

Daryl,
If you can not find locally the roll crimping tool you are looking for, you may wish to purcase this one:
http://www.siarm.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_105_103_153_168&products_id=306
You will be rewarded with better than factory looking roll crimps.

Will is tops to deal with but when you get your roll crimper you'll be p.o'ed as once you have one you can spin one on a lathe in about twenty minutes. Worth the $40 the first time round though!

I have used the roll crimp with my round ball load in a rifled H&R single barrel with no problems. The ball load just straightens them out. I also use the roll crimp with the fosbury slugs in the same gun with no problems. The latter shoot into 2 1/2" at 50 yards.
