I just came into a stutzen stocked M95 in what seems to be 8mm Mauser from an auction. It was not well described, but the pics were decent enough to generate a lowball bid that was successful. It has a welded/fixed extractor hook that does not permit the bolt head to be locked in the extended position, thus requiring inventive use of a weaver scope clamp-bar to hold the head forward while the bolt is inserted. Further, the bolt face has a spacer fitted to the original case head-diameter that does not allow the use of anyrimmed cartridge, but fits the 8mm Mauser perfectly. Came with one standard clip that does well enough to hold and feed the 8x57 cartridges in place for feeding. This is not a factory/Yugo conversion as no clip guide is milled into the rear bridge. I have not miked the bore as yet.

Standard acorn bolt handle and double set triggers.

Rear sights are a fixed standing notch for 100, and folding leaves for 200 and 300. Front sight is a non-factory bronze post, obviously fitted by a past owner and filed to profile and height.

Here’s hoping it is an older 8x50R bore or newer 8x57 barrel with a .323 bore, if not, well, we’re off to the races again on a new quest for bullets that will fit and shoot!

Thanks Daryl. I’ll have to slug the bore to see actual dimensions. I have a bunch of .321” JSP’s for 32 Winchester that I can use if the bore runs small. If the neck/throat has enough room to release the bullet cleanly, then I won’t worry too much about a slight larger diameter bullet in .323”

Thanks for the data.

I believe Daryl's post might include a typo.
IIRC 8x50R is an oddball .329" diameter.
LEE used to stock a bullet sizer die to reduce .338" bullets to the Austrian groove depth. (I have a set of those dies for reduction of .375 to 9.3/.366. I believe they will still make you a custom die if you request it.)
YES, slug your bore and see.
And you can fireforem a case with no bullet to see if a .329 bullet fits the case properly to release it. You do NOT want to load an oversize bullet for safety reasons and you also do not want to load an undersize bullet for accuracy reasons.

Could be correct, as I only copied what had been printed, but that bore diameter seemed to coincide with the groove dia.

I had always thought myself that the Austrian round had a bullet diameter of .330".

As suggested, slugging the bore is how to find out exactly what it is.

Daryl, if I may ask, where did you find that data? I have an 8x50R sporter I meed to get up and running.

Thanks!

for 8x50R Mannlicher the groove diameter is .329, the bullet diameter is .323 but the long heavy bullet expand up to 329 in the barrel when fired. a 329 bullet will be perfect if the chamber allow to load such a cartridge and have a little extra space for the case neck so this can expand. long heavy .323 S diameter roundnose bullets give most time good results, boat tails are hopeless.

rifles for the 8x56R with a .329 spitzer bullet were only rechambered.

Thank you Lancaster. I also have a couple of x56's and a decent supply of both cast and jacketed bullets. Waiting on a trimmer collet at the moment to shorten up some cases and then I'll see what fits.
