LeFever Nitro Special. Questions.
      #151770 - 25/01/10 04:10 PM

Picked up a LeFever Nitro Special (12 gauge) today at the local Cabelas for $379.00. It's in pretty good shape.Used, but not abused I guess. Serial number is 145XXX. I know that the Nitro Special was actually made by Ithaca after it bought the LeFever company, but what else can you tell me about the Nitro Special? I've been wanting a double shotgun for a couple years now and at $379.00 I figure it's a good start. Yes there is a Holland & Holland Royal Ejector 12 gauge for sale at the same Cabelas, but at $29,000 it's a little rich for me right now.So I'm going with the "Working Man's" shotgun today. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had a 12bore Nitro Special.
I liked it - there wasn't ever a thing that I didn't hit that was a fault of the gun.
Spend some time with it on clay before you hunt with it though, the auto safety takes a bit of committed training to get the hang of it, so that you aren't swinging it up and pressing a trigger against the safety!

Thanks for the advice. I'm already getting feedback from others that the Nitro Special was a strong and reliable design. Good to know. There is just something about a double shotgun.

Oh by the way. Any idea where I can find instuctions on how to break it down? Remember I'm new to doubles. So don't groan too loudly.

Other than popping the forend iron off to remove the barrels, what would you want to take apart?
I find they have a wee bit too much drop in the stock for my taste. And I have 5 of 'em. The 20 ga. really raps you when it goes off.

John,

You have to post pics of some of your guns, my friend. It has been a long time since you posted pics of any of your treasures. You have to show them off!
