By my notes I've tried 36 different loads in my 10 bore over the last 5 years, and at long last have hit upon a winning combo. This in in a 5 dram gun, and my initial attempts with 138gn of Goex FFg crossed 9" at 25 yards! The only thing that really worked better was 145gn ofGoex 3F in brass cases or a very hefty charge of Blue Dot (more than I'd want to use on a regular basis) in Federal plastic. Those two still crossed 4" a 25.

The winning combo uses 120gn swiss FFFg in a Federal plastic case, topped by a 1/8" card, and 1/8" lubed felt wad, another card, then 3/8" of lubed felt. I'd noticed that the under ball felt wads would get shredded, apparently from getting pushed around the ball, so tried the idea of sandwiching one between two card to ensure a good gas seal. The smaller charge of the hotter powder also allowed for a better wad column. These were separated by 1/2" at 50yds, with the left printing just above the right. I'll take it. I didn't chrono them yet, but am guessing 1300-1350 based on other loads.

With bore guns being all about barrel time it is interesting to see how much farther to the left the load printed when I propped my elbows on the bench with my forearm loosely supported vs offhand where the gun could recoil freely.



To say I'm happy with this is the understatement of the year!

..Its just like shooting a springpiston airrifle. The gun needs to have as much "free movements" during the firing as possible.If holding on too tight the grouping will scatter more..
The "followthrue" must also be more predominant on borerifles than regular "30-06s"...

Glad you found a good load, Bob. I am assuming your gun is rifled.

I'm also finding out, somewhat to my dismay, just how much different 'holds' can effect impacts of a double. I thought I was holding properly using the bag under my left hand, just as I would hold when shooting offhand, but the gun certainly shoots better and with less dispersion offhand, than off bags. I can consistantly hit better offhand, than my bench groups indicate I should be able to.

As rigbymaster indicated, follow through is very important with low velocity firearms - this means the hold must be the same shot to shot, so the recoil and therefore barrel kick is the same shot to shot. The more recoil, the more exacting must be the consistancy of everything involved, form loading to holding and shooting.

Sorry to hear it took so long but look at those results. That's great. Perhaps if you shoot a big furry, Alaskan critter you will be kind enough to share the pictures.

Daryl and Grenader, I plan to carry this guns for moose this fall. I think it would be just about perfect. It is a nice little roundball gun, w/~1:100 twist. I'm melting lube right now and plan to hit the range with 30-40 rounds of the new load for confirmation and practice this week.

AKMike, Birchwood on Thursday or Friday ~10-2. Let me know if you can make it. I've got a few doubles I'm chronoing and also mounted a new scope on a rifle I'm going to use for sprig bear, so will be there a while.

Great shooting there Bob!
Used my Chapuis for my last two moose, and what a hoot it was! This past Septembers bull was shot at a lasered 187 yards off hand after one of the guys in our group missed it three times with his scoped .338. To say I was pleased was an understatement.
