I ordered a Remington 798 Express in .375 H&H for what I think is a very good price. I wanted a CZ550, but the price of the Remington swayed me. The rifle is basically a 98 Mauser made in Zastava. I am sure the rifle will need some tweaking, but I finally got my 375 H&H.

I am sure there are plenty of members that know this gun. Was once sold by Interarms and Charles Daly.

Can I ask what did you pay for that gun?

3-shot magazine?

That would be a fun gun project.

Guns like that are my favorites. Not so expensive that I want to keep them "pristine". I like monkeying and personalizing guns. Funny, too as the ones I monkey with I keep and use.

CDNN Investments has a closeout on them and the .375 H&H with the deluxe walnut stock is $599.00 plus shipping. They are $499.00 with either the brown or green laminate stock. They didn't show a .458 with the walnut stock, just the laminate stocks for $499.00 also. All the other calibers 308, 30-06, 243, 300WM and I believe they had a 7.62 x 39 all in the $300+ to $400.00 range.
I believe the one I ordered was called the Model 798 Express deluxe version. I still prefer the looks of walnut to laminates, but they are both probably ok. I should have it Monday or Tuesday and I will post pictures.

While the quality has been argued about, I like 'em. One word of warning, though:
go easy on the lead if you use a Lead-sled. Some of the Zastavas seem to have cheesy stocks and at those prices we can't expect everything.

I read somewhere that Remington purchased the barreled actions and stocked them in the US. I don't know if this makes a difference or not.

Although I haven't shot the Rem 798 yet, this is my first impression of my $600.00 big game rifle.
Metal finish- Highly polished and nicely blued. Seems to be a little rougher on the reciever directly behind the follower. I believe that this is where some metal might have been removed to allow for the longer .375 bullet length.
Wood - Very nice straight grain walnut. Pretty but plain. I would like to remove the angled end of the forend and add an ebony tip.
Checkering - nicely done for a work gun.
Weight - probably adequate for a rifle of this caliber.
Wood to metal fit - It seems as if some work might be required. I can't run a sheet of paper between stock and barrel the complete length of the inletting.
Fit - Rifle seems to fit me well, but I am of average arm length.
Recoil pad - Standard Remington pad..a bit hard for my liking. Maybe a Pachmayr decelerator will replace it.
Sights - The open sights are adequate, but a three leaf express sight may be in this guns future.
This rifle may be a work in progress, but I must say it is a good foundation.
I am very happy so far, but I still have to touch off a few rounds.

Looked at one the first year they come out while at SCI--agree with your analogy--they need work..BUT, in looking at most guns in that price range--most do as well..just read an article about some new Ruger carbine out..groups with factory ammo in that thing were shooting 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches --in todays world that is pathetic IMHO...I am willing to bet your 798 will do better thant that..

One thing I really didnt like was the factory open sights on the ones I looked at--I told the factory rep at the show that I figured they would last all of a half hour after leaving the truck to go hunting..

For the money spent, think you will be more than happy..let us know once you pull the trigger..

I will probably set this gun up with a 1 x 4 Euro Leupold 30mm scope and quick detachable Talley rings and bases. Something low and compact.

Think that is a good choice--however, I like to have fixed sights set and ready to go in case something happens to my scope while there or on the way..so I can still use my rifle...

If your's shoots as good as the 2 Whitworth/Interarms 375's I have you'll like it alot!

Just got one of the Remington 798s from CDNN in .458 Win mag. It has a flipdown rear sight that doesn't look to bad. The front is hooded. I will take a picture and post it to see what you think. It does not have a barrel band, just a post on the forestock. It will have to go to the gunsmith for a once over, but for the price, you can't beat it. A friend of mine bought one in .375 H&H.

I shot one recently, and I have to say that I really like the rifle. The action was a bit rough in the beginning, but has smoothed considerably as it has been functioned. I fired a 500 gr. handload at 2050 fps and it shot low at 50 yds. As the back sight is at its maximum elevation, the front sight must be shortened by probably 1 mm or so. We are considering attaching a 3-leaf express sight and using it as an iron-sighted rifle exclusively. It isn't D&T for a receiver sight, else I would be inclined to attach a nice Lyman 48 that I have.
