In 2005, Steven Rinella won a lottery permit to hunt for wild buffalo in the Alaskan wilderness. He tells the story of his hunt but he also traces the history of the animal that has long haunted the American imagination in his book, “American Buffalo: In Search Of A Lost Icon.”
I'm not sure of the critters stateside but there are free roaming buffalo up here. Several herds are pretty hard to get to. Waaayy off the beaten tracks!
Edit; I know that our southern cousins down in Canada have wild herds roaming the countryside too. The durned things always are on the road in the middle of the night when you don't expect it. But they do wake you up quickly.
