.510 caliber expanding bullets
      #149900 - 09/01/10 01:07 AM

Hi, I know there's lots of experience here on the subject. I'm shooting a 500 Jeffery at what is essentially 500 NE velocities (570g bullet at 2175 fps), which is the point at which I can swing and shoot the rifle naturally without being overly concerned about recoil.

My question is what expanding bullet(s) do you folks recommend for cape buffalo and Alaskan brown bear, realizing that these may be two different bullets. I want something that will expand to close to double caliber, but will penetrate and hold together. I'm shooting 570g TSX's right now, but am a little concerned about them opening up at these velocities. I know North Fork plans to come out with their soft points in .510 caliber soon as well, and of course a the 570g and 600g Woodleigh Weld Cores and Protected Points are in the mix as well.

Thanks much,

Chuck

I don't know about cape buff - but a cast flat nose WW bullet will work wonders on a big bear. They will expand and still drive deeply - lengthwise, if that's what you want.

The late, great Elmer Keith once advised me to use the 560gr. Lyman flat nose for cape buffalo from my .458, driven at around 2,050fps. I am sure it would have done the job. One merely hardens them to act as solids, or leaves them as-cast for some expansion.

Woodleigh must make jacketed softs for the .500's.

I think that you are right the Barnes may be a bit slow to expand for you.

Personally I would use a Woodleigh or the new North Fork. I have not tried the new North Fork, but the old ones were excellent, and of course the Woodleighs are excellent.

Thanks, I'm anxiously awaiting the new North Forks, I think the Woodleighs, particulary the 600g PP should work well too. I've done my load development with the 570g TSX's but I don't have an imminent hunt so I have time to do some more. I'll work up a load with the Woodleigh 600g PP while I'm waiting for the North Forks to come out. ...

Thanks to both of you,

Chuck

I picked up 50 of the new .510 caliber 570g Swift A-Frames at SCI Reno on Thursday. They showed progressive bullet expansion examples from their test tank from 1500 fps to 2250 fps. They looked awful good, I bought 50 ...

G'Day Fella's,

I would firstly like to say, that I have absolutely no experience with this or any other truly Big Bore cartridges but according to the 2010 Woodleigh catalog, all 0.510" bullets designed for the .500 Jeffery are designed to expand at an impact velocity (IV) of 1800 to 2200 fps!
The only exception to this, is the 600 grain PP SN, with a IV range of 1800 to 2250 fps.

Hope this is of some help and Good Hunting!
