404 Jeffery in a 1909 Argentine
      #149874 - 08/01/10 04:21 PM

Well, I've decided to go ahead and start with my next project. A couple of years ago I had a nice 7x57 Mauser made up on an Argentine action and have really loved it, both the cartridge and the action. I want a 404 Jeffery to (more or less) match it. I want to go with the 1909 action again.

What is the current thinking on the magazine box issue? I understand feeding can be problematic. Who makes a proper box for this cartridge? I'd like to have a slight drop magazine for full capacity. What about bottom metal?

Any recommendations as to metalsmiths that have done this same job in the past? Guys with 404's on standard Mausers - how do you find they feed, and what was the story on your individual builds?

Thanks very much for any help.

Duane Wiebe does good bottom metal. Cheaper in the long run too!!

Great to see you are building one too, If things keep going this way they will be common again. I was going to build one on a standard length Mauser action, but the Brno 602 action came along first. The standard length mauser can be a bit tricky to get it to feed, I would look long and hard to find a gunsmith who has done it before successfully first. Don't forget the photo's and a full acount of the details.

Cheers

Squarebridge

Von Gruff built himself a 404 on a Columbian Mauser so hopefully he will come in on this thread and offer you a few pointers.

I have an original Oberndorf Mauser opened up to 404. When I got it from Africa it had only just been worked on and did not feed cartridges from the mag at all well. It required a good push on the bolt and cases were being badly scratched.
Before taking to the feed rails and guides I carefully studied the feeding process and could see that it was the extractor that was not allowing the case head to slip into place until late into the feed process, hence the cases were being forced along the rails before eventually popping up inline with the chamber. A small stoning to radius the bottom lip of the extractor was all it took to have my Mauser feeding like a hot knife through butter. The big 404s just pop up under the extractor and slip into the chamber. Even cast bullets feed no problem at all, especially Von Gruffs 350grainers which have a flat meplate and I understand do not feed quite so well in VG’s converted Mauser.

Now your feed rails will need modifying but don’t overlook the extractor as a cause of feed problems.

Good luck.

I have a German Recknagel 404 Bottom metal which is nice but my 458 box made in the USA by sound metal might be a better option for you.

As noted above by Eagle 27 I have built my 404 on a FN Colombuan 98 and it feeds as slick as could could want. I was fortunate in that my GS understood the requirements for good feeding symetry and we used the standard ex mil box and follower along with the bottom metal that was changed to button release in the floor plate. Did have to re-look at the retention of cartridges as Eagle 27 noted but that was because the 350gn GC bullet I designed had a bore riding nose that was wider than the usual Woodleigh that we had origionally set up for. All it took was to take the milling of the mag box side walls further forward ( it had only gone forward enough to suit the Woodleigh nose shape)to allow the cartridge to lay more to the outer side of the box. It retains and feeds ALL cartidges under any enthusiastic working of the bolt now. It comfortable holds one up and three down.
Good to see you are going to have the two rifles that will handle ALL of you big game needs.

If you PM me your email I can send you a write-up I did on the build as it is probably a bit long to post here.

G'Day Fella's,

As per Fatboy404, Ditto to Square Bridge on Action and Cartridge selection!
