HELP: Merkel 141 vs Chapuis?
      #149716 - 07/01/10 07:27 AM

Anyone feel the Merkel 141 double rifle is worth the additional price over a Chapuis UGEX? How do these compare in quality, accuracy, ect? Thanks.

Accuracy - my Merkel's and all others I know are fine.

The Chapuis's I know of are all accurate.

In regards to accuracy, everything can be tightened up group wise by hand loading.

Merkel's tend to be a bit "clunkier" IMHO, especially in the bigger calibres.

I would choose the one that "feels" better in your hands and "comes up" better for you.

I would get the Merkel because I know of several (too many) Chapuis that needed work after not that much shooting.

I can't hold either in person because I don't live anywhere NEAR a nice double rifle place (4 hours away). So I depend on the knowledgeable experts here on the forum!

Hoser

Well, my advice would be to buy a plan ticket or get in a car and spend the money on fuel and go and do it in person.

It would be money well spent IMHO.

I really wouldn't buy one without handling them.

If I buy anything over a couple of thousand $$$, I spend the money to go and see it in person.

Yes, it is a PITA but a small price to pay considering if you bought one and it wasn't right and the $$$ you would lose in selling it.

Just my HO, good luck with your purchase.

500NE - It's odd to see that statement. My impression would be the opposite. I think the Merkel is more "traditional" and retains the lines and balance of a vintage rifle as compared to a Chapuis.

A Merkel .470NE weighs just over 10 lbs. while a Chapuis in the same caliber weighs about 11.5 lbs.

I've not owned a Chapuis, but do own the entry level Merkel in .500NE.

I strongly agree this gent should handle them "hands on" and make a decision. He can't make a valid choice from what he reads here.

He should skip down to Las Vegas January 14-17 for the Antique Arms Show. There he can handle DR's and get a better idea of what suits his taste.

Travel four hours? That's nothing in this game! If that little bit of misery and inconvenience will deter you, then you are exploring the wrong hobby.

Reno NV is only 3-1/2 hrs drive from my place.
The website shows a chapuis in 9.3 in stock.
A phone call would clear that up in a moment.

I've gone much farther, and gone through much more (than a seven hour round trip) to look at and handle a double rifle.

Aren't the Dallas and Las Vegas shows coming up soon?
The Reno shows are also a great place to view/handle/compare modern and vintage double rifles...

Cheers

The Merkel 141 is the model that's built on a 28ga frame, so it should be pretty trim. Caliber would be 30-06 or 9.3x74R.

The 141 Merkel and the Chapuis Ugx chambered for 9.3X74R are about the same weight! The Chapuis and the Merkel are both very accurate, and both are light for the chambering. The plus on the side of the Merkel is it is more along the lines of the old Britt doubles, and has the regulation adjustment system. The 141 also has a more splinter forend wood, While the Chapuis has a full beavertail forend wood, a feature I totally dislike on a shotgun, and will not have one on a double rifle of any make.

These two rifles are both on a proper size action for the rounds chambered in them in this case. Both being lighter that I like, both are quality items on the outside, but I prefer the more classic lines of the Merkel, and I find nowhere near the requiring of maker adjustment under warranty with the Merkel than with the Chapuis. Of all the folks I know who have very good Chapuis doubles, the rifles were bought ten years ago or more. It seems in recent times the Chapuis have been experiencing some problems, while the Merkels seem to be trouble free.

Personally I would be a Merkel buyer over the Chapuis, but that is a personal choice, and I have the benefit of having handled both, and shot both, which is something the poster here needs to do for himself. Good luck with what ever you pick!

I would get the merkel, as i dont like the ejector/lump on the chapius. It may wery well be as good as the traditional, but why change a good looking system, but then i dont drive citroen either.

I have owned both and prefer the Merkel. I hated the Chapuis beaver fore stock.

Yeah, I do think that the beavertail forearm is a bit clunky, but didn't want to sound petty! I'm still looking at both.

I handled and debated them both, and after a long decision i chose the Chapuis, i don't drive citroen either. lol lol

I also don't like the fat forend, but it can be trimmed to my likeing, so that's not a biggie! Of the guns i looked at, the Chapuis generally had a lot nicer wood on them.

I found what i wanted at a decent price and bought it. I'm not one bit sorry with my choise.

BTW, i also don't drive a Mercedes...
