The 9.3x62 on vacation !!!
      #149528 - 05/01/10 11:46 PM

Just got back from holidays and thought I would share some photos and findings .The 286 grain PP's at 2400 fps print 1.5 inches low at 200 yards when sighted 2.5 inches high at 100 yards. The 320 grain PP's @ 2200 fps shoot 4.5 inches lower then the 286's at 100 yards but dead in line which is good. That makes them 2 inches low at 100 and easy to allow for or move the scope up 8 clicks to be bang on at 100. I havent worried about it because in real terms 2 inches on an animal that is 18 inches deep is not worth worrying about at a 100 yards. All the projectiles in the photos have been recovered from pigs & goats in the last week. Penertration & expantion was excellent to say the least. I know some people on this site have had trouble with the 286 grain Woodleigh PP's but I can only call it as I see it & I think they are very very good .I put the photo's of the billy in because I wanted to show the expantion of the 286 grainers at a measured 200 yards & as you can see it is fine. The little boar was unlucky to show up at the wrong time when looking for goats. He was running away from me at 65 yards when I shot him 4 inches above the tail. Penertration was 27 inches & the retained wieght was 270 grains. As 9.3 owners & users already know the 9.3x62 is a lot of gun in a small package . I couldnt be happier with my new hunting mate & cant wait til the next trip !! .Talk soon Neale .The 2 projectiles on there own are 320 grainers & the others are 286 grainers.

That's a lovely rifle there Neale. Screams African Safari with at least one Buff.

Excellent post and keep them coming.

Your experience with the PP bullets is quite ineresting. Frankly, I'm shocked to see how many you are able to recover from such game. The performance here is totally the oppositieof what my own testingindicated with th lot I used. I'm very curious if your lot was manufacturd to some different standard than the lots used by some others. Great thread, and thanks for posting.

Great rifle by the way, and superb performance.

Great stuff and a VERY nice Brno ZKK 600 9.3x62mm conversion...

I share 9.3x57's confusion over the Woodleigh 286gr PP's performance though... be interesting to know the batch number and manufacture date vs the ones Tophet1 had problems with in Africa.

That is a beautiful rifle. Well done and great shooting.

Here are my Lot # details for projectiles that did not expand in Africa:

Rifle FN Mauser 98
Barrel 25" Lothar Walther
Brass Lapua
Primer W-W
Load 58 grains 2208 (Varget)
Muzzle velocity 2,393 fps as per F1 Chrony

Projectile
Woodleigh 286 Protected Point Soft Point.
Cat. No. W74B
SD .305 BC .381
Rec. Impact velocity 1,900 - 2,600 fps
Lot Number 508 manufactured Oct 2008

Geoff McDonald confirmed my results with his own testing but the performance you got was what is needed. Good news.

As per the other fella's comments, great looking ZKK-600 BRNO rifle.
F-B, who did the Wood and Metal work on this rifle?
I may have read this before but have forgotten...........

Sorry but I'm a bit confused about what that Green Stuff on the ground, around your trophies is???
Just Kidding!
It's been a bloody long time since I've seen that much Green Grass!!!

Yes - that green stuff is confusing for anytime around here except for July. Here's a picture I took of the fox target on our black powder trail walk last Friday, New Years Day.

This is picture only, and bears no comment further. Just for a change of weather.

On the bottom of the empty Woodleigh boxes is as follows . AUG 2009 614 . The other box has 4/03 #12 hand written .Something I did notice is that the old batch has a smooth cannelure ring & they seem to be tougher than the later ones with the knurled cannelure ring.HOMMER , I dont know how to do links but if you go to "rifles under 375" and it is under "Another 9.3x62".I am impressed with the photo's myself seeing that they were taken with my new Nokia phone !!!.

9.3x57 . I sold a 375 H&H when I decided to build this 9.3 & on the same shots, the 300 grain PP & 350 grain PP wont penertrate any futher than the 9.3 . I found it hard to believe myself that 3 feet of pig or goat will stop a "Big Game Rifle" .I will find some photo's of recovered 375 projectiles on pigs & goats for you to compare.

Neale,
Could you tell me the model and height of the Talley mounts you have on the Brno?
I have a mate after a set for his M21 which have the same dovetail as the ZKK.

Hey "Heavysetyoungfella404" , I'd love to run a couple of those PP's thru my test media to compare with prior {unsuccessful, poorly performing} PP's.

Also, I have shot whitetail deer end on with the .375 loaded with 300 grain Hornady RN's and the critter stopped them, too.

I thought you collected some on side shots on goats. That would stun me.

None of the bullets were recovered from animals side on unless they were doubles. Here are a couple of photo's of bullets from my 375. The unmarked ones are a mixture of 300 grain Woodleigh PP & RN.
All were recovered from pigs & goats.

Hey "Heavysetyoungfella404" I agree with 9.3x57 that sure sounds better, otherwise you sound like a Harley bike..... just joking mate..... I love the photo of todays hunt, it has a nice set of tusks another for the European mount I guess.

Your new 9.3 looks great and will make a nice match with the .404 Jeffery.

Now here is a question for you.... what's tomorrow...... WORK ......

Cheers Mate, Well done.....Africa next vacation....

I had a dear friend, now departed, who had 2 glasses of 270gr. Winch. Power Points, all removed from Montana Elk shot in the 50's and 60's, which looked identical to the WW. Power Points in the picture - every one of them looks almost exactly the same from the top, and had almost full length of the shank to the cannelure intact, rather than curled over the base.

Work? I did some stock work on my double .58 today - it was great. As far as a job, haven't worked at one in around 10 years.

Life is good.

Good to see the 9.3 took you on vacation along with it.

And lovely CZ rifle custom conversion. What did you have done to it, and by whom? Thanks.
