Looking for a "new" double
      #14934 - 18/05/04 05:06 PM

A PH friend of mine has asked me to look for a "new" double rifle for him. This is a serious enquiry.

He will be using the rifle as a backup rifle in Africa on buffalo hunts and presumably also on elephant, cats etc.

I asked him for his preferences and he does not have a preference at this stage for new or 'used', calibre to be .375 or larger. I advised a minimum of a .400, rimmed not belted, and preferably a .470 NE as that is probably the only calibre n the class you will get loaded ammo for in Africa (or almost anywhere).

He is looking to source the rifle in Australia and obviously at a realistic price. It will be a user not a wall hanger. (If on the other hand someone wanted to drop one off in Africa, maybe elsewhere too ).

I believe the following doubles are available new in Oz: Merkel, Krieghoff, Chapuis, Heym (?), maybe Blaser. Will have to look at the magazines to see if other brands are available. In addtion it may be possible to find a 'vintage' rifle suitable to the task and also at the right price.

I would welcome peoples comments on first hand experience (not necessarily owning them) on the handling of various doubles, pluses and minuses, use etc. If anyone wants to share the prices they have paid or sold them for by PM that is welcome too.

Who knows a seller may be able negotiate some hunting discounts too.

Thanks mate, but the price of your WD was well out of the price range I am looking for.

I would highly recommend the Chapuis in 470. I helped a guy sight in and develop reloads for a Chapuis 470. His rifle shot and handled very well. A good friend of mine has bought one in 470 but has not taken delivery of it yet I will also assist him in loading for it so I will keep you posted on those results. I have had a 9,3 Chapuis for @ 5 years and I have shot it @ 1000 times. It is still as tight as the day I bought it. I have hunted with it quite a bit and the wood and steel finish has held up well.
You are correct a 470 is the best calibre for a working PH.
Another very nice thing about the Chapuis is they [most are here in the USA check for sure before you buy a particular rifle] already cut for a scope mount. It is a simple four screw attachment. The mount on my 9,3 always goes back to zero, and I have 2 scopes fitted for it. He might prefer a scope for some situations. When the scope is removed you can not see the bases when aiming with the iron sights.
While I prefer the Nostalga of a British double for my own hunting if I was going to PH I would use a Chapuis 470 for a work gun. You can also get a set if 12 gauge bbls fitted to it.
I have been very, very happy with my Chapuis 9,3.

From the list of makers above, I would get the Heym. Also, they are lightweight, which is an advantage if the PH will carry the rifle more than he shoots it.

I've heared many good reports about the Chapius. I have a new Merkel 375 H&H double and am please with it. The Chapius run a few thousand dollars more than the Merkel.
