Taping up double rifle muzzles ?
      #14873 - 17/05/04 03:02 PM

It is common practice to tape up the muzzle of a bolt action prior to a hunt so mud, dirt or debris doesn't block the barrel.

Is this also done with double rifles? Is it wise, or cause any problems?

Thanks.

I don't think it hurts. It keeps the mud wasps and such out.

We hunt deer during november when it often snows. I have been taping the muzzles of various rifles for years with no adverse effects. I use black electricians tape with one layer over the muzzle.

I always tape up my bbls. Never had any problems. However when in heavy rain you must be careful as water WILL enter the bbl from the chamber end even if a round is in the chamber. With tape over the muzzle water could collect in the bbl.
I also use to tape up muzzlebreaks, but once when my wife and I were hunting together, I shot a deer with the taped up muzzlegreak. A piece of the tape struck my wife in the face. [She was to my left and behind me].

Hey NE450No2, which one of your doubles has the muzzle-brakes? How did that affect the regulation?

(pssst! ..gutsy move, mate, admitting to owning a rifle with a muzzle-break, on a double rifle forum. My hat's off to you!)

Maraki, he used to be nothing but BOLT ACTION TRASH till he saw the light. Something else you should know is, NE450No2 has been known to own and shoot WEATHERBYs as wel! That's where the muzzle brake was installed!

I tape mine in wet weather, and in African areas where the mud dobber wasps are evident! Have had no problems with the practice !

I don't tape my muzzles and I don't stick them in the mud... I pay attention, check my bores regularly and if I hunt in the snow I might use some tape of one kind or another.

#2 tell me it ain't so, you don't really shoot Weatherbys do you?

Sad to say, but I must admit at one time I was BOLT RIFLE TRASH. I even owned Weatherby's and some of them had muzzlebreaks. That was "before I know better" Those days are behind me now. After using Double Rifles for the last 6 years I am BORN AGAIN.
I leave for a 21 day safari in ZIM May 28, I will be taking 2 rifles, both of them doubles.

I plan to hunt Sheep and Goat in the next couple of years and recently bought the rifle I will hunt them with, a break down single shot... which is after all, half of a double rifle.

Marrakai
Good one.
However I have handled but not shot a Krieghoff 375H&H double rifle with muzzlebreaks. It did look a bit weird. And I saw a 450/400 with an extra set of bbls in 458 Win Mag, where both sets of bbls were magna-ported.

Really. I've never heard of such a thing. I guess I need to get out more.
