Were do the machinist here get their tool bits and steel?

I've been using Brownells mostly, but would like to find some place cheaper.

There is a company I use for work called McMaster Carr. I think they are from Los Angelas, CA. They have a lot of strange items. In my experience, if they don't have it, it doesn't exist. Hope this helps. I know they sell all different types of steel in different sizes as well as bits, etc. Just google their name.

For steels, cupric metals, and exotic alloys these guys have it.

I haven't had to buy cutters in a long long time - lots of stock and I either grind my own or job special cutters out to a local grind shop (reamers, helical broaches...)

For the indexable cutters (carbide and ceramic inserts) I usually get a list together for such things and order from MSC or ENCO if I can't get them from a local jobber.

McMaster-Carr is a great source!
It's a rare occasion that I don't have my order on the doorstep the next day.
Price isn't Bargain-Basement on anything, but the price is consistent -- and with these guys you're getting the 'Opportunity to Purchase *Today*' !!

Any mild steel sheet/bar/tubing I need for tooling or fixtures typically comes from one of the area's big (industry) metal recycling outfits.

Blain, haven't you ever been to Boeing Surplus?
I used to work across from the Space and Defense Center, right down the road from good ol' "Bo-Mart" as we called it.
We could get anything from tiny carbide drills to full-kit 747 landing gear!

Cheers

Where are you in Washington State? I can give you some tips, need your location.

And, exactly what are you looking for? Steel alloy types and sizes, HSS tooling for lathes, carbide tooling, end mills????????

BoMart went E-Bay?
What a loss!

The floorpan had (finally) rusted out of my little pickup truck one day.
Shot over to BoMart during lunch to get a sheet of titanium to form and rivet in it's place ('cause I could...)
Waiting in line for the scales with a bunch of other Jacks we all got a laugh when the marm at the front of the line reprimanded the dude running the scale as he crushed his pepsi can and tossed it into the wastebasket at his feet.

(the gal gasps loudly and looks over her shoulder at us in line, snaps back to the worker...)
"That's wasteful, don't you people recycle around here!!?"

No kidding, she was actually serious about it too.
There were turbines and nose gear assemblies just outside in the yard as well as the typical few acres of material and facilities items...

Cheers

I've used JTS Machine for machine tools. Good prices, selection, and service.
