Favorite Loads for the 505 Gibbs
      #14798 - 15/05/04 06:32 AM

Fellows,

I would be interested in favorite loads for the 505 Gibbs. Also I would be interested in actual field experience with this particular caliber. Has anyone on this board hunted DG with one and how does it rate with say 458 Lott or 470 NE? Thanks.

Try 122 to 133 grains of IMR4350 with 600 grain pills.

Try 128 to 140 grains of IMR4350 with 525 grain pills.

Somewhere with those ranges you will find the "sweet" spot.

Personally I liked to keep the 600 grain pills in the 2200 to 2300 fps range and limited the 525 grain bullets to no more than 2400 fps. They can be driven FAR faster though, but you shoulder may not appreciate it, and soft points will start to fail when striking bone.

It kills better than a 458, by the way.

Scott

Are there loads that you have personally used and tried?

NitroX,

My hunting loads were:
The rifle had a 25" barrel

600 grain bronze solid
Fed 215 or CCI 250 primer
128.5 grains of IMR4350
muzzle velocity ~ 2300 avg(avg velocity typical ran between 2300 and 2320 depending on lot and ambient temperature)

525 grain soft point
Fed 215 or CCI 250 primer
133 grains of IMR4350
muzzle velocity ~ 2445 fps avg(ran between 2445 and 2470s as I recall depending upon the same parameters as the 600 grain load)

I ran hotter loads, but recoil was not always pleasant. Also, when operating pressures got over ~ 43,500 psi / 44000 psi extraction would start to become an issue, which also helped me decide to stay where I did. No the brass was not "soft" I had it checked by a metallurgical lab.

Case volume varied from ~ 173 to 178.5 grains of water.

Satisfied? This information is from OLD notes which are not too well kept anymore, and memory as I have not owned a 505 Gibbs for over 10 years.

Just be aware, NitroExpress.com is very concerned about the posting of reloading information. We are not able to verify all the loads published on the forums by various people. Nor do we accept any responsibility for loads published especially by members over whom we have little control or knowledge. You however might be personally responsibile and liable. I am not suggesting these loads are not reasonable as I have not checked them against any reloading reference.

The reason I bring this up is you have stated elsewhere on the net to never having owned anything larger than a 500 Beowulf so I was querying where these loads came from. If they come from a reloading programme or from a reloading manual, it is usually good form to state that as it gives potential users information as to the veracity of the loads. It gives credibility to the reloading information. I often try to do this if I am able and no one else responds. If you have done this and it is from a manual it is being helpful and also useful to other members which is good.

So no I am not satisfied but I am satisfied that any readers of this thread can decide for themselves given these discussions.

NitroX,

You should not believe everything you read on the net .

The loads I posted for the 505 Gibbs are precisely what I say there are. I don't know the brass make, as I have forgotten and all the information I have written down is internal volume. Pressure data was analytically arrived at, but the velocities were chronographed, and the powder charges weighed with a balance beam scale. As I stated the rifle had a 25" barrel. To be honest I don't know who it stacks up against ANY reload manual, but feel free to check it out. By the way, the simulation thinks that the pressures for the loads I posted are ~ 40000 psi for the 525 grain load and ~ 43000 psi for the 600 grain load.

The 500 AHR will achieve 2300 fps with a 600 grain bullet if you use 122 grains of IMR4350. It will hit 2435 fps with a 535 grain bullet if you use 128.5 grains of IMR4350. These are chronographed velocities from a rifle with a 26" barrel. Again extraction is an issue when calculated chamber pressures exceed about 45000 psi. It is important to understand this isn't sticky bolt, the bolt turns easily until the extraction cam is engaged, which is about 45 degrees of bolt swing.

Of course feel free to believe that 118 grains of H4831 SC will hurl those old 525 grain slugs at 2400+ fps or whatever one individual who claims to own a 505 Gibbs stated sometime ago.

If you don't want me answering questions on this site, just say so, I will certainly depart. I haven't completely left the other site you mention because I was THERE FIRST, damn it!

But Scott, you yourself said it!??? It can be difficult to shift true varying degrees of "truth" . "Cry Wolf" springs to mind.

Anyway nuff said.

As I wrote if these are loads that are within legitimate parameters then they are welcome. If not they won't be up for long after I work it out. If questionable I will edit the posts to add some warning comments. I will do this to any member's post if they are questionable or incorrect and dangerous. I have done this in the past and will do so again. BUT NE.com can not and does not verify all loads posted.

As to the other site. I don't want this degenerate to that sort of BS.

I agree with Nitro here and I thank you for not using your 'other' log in name here. I hope that what goes on at other Forums stays there and that EVERYONE starts clean here with no old grudges or other BS.

While I don't think that the 'theoritical' understanding is as great here the 'practical' application is quite a bit higher. I also think that Common Sense and Manners are much better. I guess it must be the Aussie influence as many of us post both places. Or not.

NitroX,

I wholeheartedly agree. By the way, I sent a somewhat lengthy PM.

Mickey,

I seldom post here, or even lurk here, but I saw this thread and another dealing with the 9.3X74R, and I figured I would share my meager knowledge with these two rounds.

Actually this site reminds me of an older and kinder "other site". It is much more gentile here, and I too like it that way.

I use RL15 in my 505. With 105 grs for the 600 Hawk and 110 grs for the 525 Woodleigh and 535 Hawk. These are moderate in mine, but should be worked up to in any other 505. There is a web page available with a lot of 505 data that can be found with a search using 505 Gibbs. Also, kapok is used to contain powder charge in bottom of case.

4350 seems a mite on the slow burning rate side, but maybe ok.

Bertram brass is so soft, it is difficult to tell pressure by head expansion. Hornerber is good, and that is what I use now.
