Which is the cheapest place to go on a plains game hunt for warthog ,zebra, wilderbeast, baboon and either a kudu or orynx (or other antelope types) as well as 1x cape buffalo. I wasnt after luxury accomadation or caviar and truffles with my Moet Chandon in the spa bath. I wasnt needing the No1 SCI animal or super big trophies ,just a good hunt ,decent animals and be totaly legal and ethical. Any ideas for the not so super rich among us who dont mind roughing it a bit ,but want a good productive hunt.

You'll find a few options on my website if you would like to take a look at it and we occasionally have special offers for late season...... the cheapest Buff package I have at the moment is for a 2x1 hunt in the Selous Reserve Tanzania for US$8500 per hunter inclusive of all odds & ends and including the Buff trophy fee, charters & dip & pack......but you would have to hunt 8-15 July.

Remember a short buffalo hunt with some plains game thrown in will not be the same as a cheap plains game hunt.
If you wanted a plains game hunt on the cheap, South Africa or Namibia would be the place to go. Daily prices of around A$350 per day are possible and game for a seven day hunt could include game such as eland, kudu, warthog, zebra, duiker, impala, and possibly include springbok, blesbok, gemsbok, bushbuck etc etc. All depending on where you are hunting. Trophy fees will vary quite a bit.
If you add Cape Buffalo, you are really probably hunting cape buffalo firstly and hoping for some plains game in the area where the buffalo are. Some hunters do both, say in Zimbabwe, but really are hunting two separate areas, say a plains game hunt in the South of Zimbabwe (eg) and then Buff in the Zambezi for a few days. There would be undoubtably some plains game in the buff area but often less animals in number is the case.
It all depends on your priorities and how much you are willing to spend.
I know what you mean regarding camps ie the hunting is more important than the camp luxuries, but truth to tell in "normal" priced camps often the cost doesn't determine the camp, its more the location that does, and price is more on the game and reputation of the outfitter than the cost of the camp. I don't think you will be seeing caviar and Moet e Chandon Champagne in any of the camps.
I was speaking to a PH who was off to Tanzania to hunt in the Selous this season yesterday. His indication of prices sounded very favourable for a short buffalo hunt. If you are interested in more info, drop me an email.

For my first African hunt , I was thinking of Didimala safaris in Namibia ,but they dont offer buffalo. If I wanted buff ,I will probably do as you said and take a shorter side trip for a few days after the plains game hunt. Either that ,or take another short trip just for Buff and whatever happens to come along later on. I,m waiting to get made redundant from work before I take the trip. Hopefully early next year.

A short buffalo hunt with a different outfitter will be at least 5 days to 7 days. Remember to leave enough days to have a good chance at hunting a representative bull.
The price will be from US$4,500 for a real deal to around US$6,000 to US$7,000 for a possible deal and ofcourse up to US$10,000. Remember to ensure that what you compare is equivalent and add on costs don't make up the difference. Also obviously the area hunted plays a part. And of course there is the axiom that "you get what you pay for". Sometimes there are reasons why one is much cheaper than it should be. End of season hunts can be much cheaper if you are flexible and can hunt at shorter notice.

In our area ( very big, great trophies) in zimbabwe you pay 250 US day plus very cheap trophy fees. Is probably the cheapest price in Africa in the unfenced ares.

Zimbabwe was an area I was considering. Due to the bad reputation it has for other reasons, it is probably scaring other hunters away ,making hunts cheaper. I was against supporting countries which carry on the way the leader of Zimbabwe is ,but then I dont want to penalise the safari operators there. I certainly dont want to hunt on any stolen land though. I,m going to buy African Hunter 2 and check out Zimbabwe. Should be good for plains game as well as a good buffalo.

Standard prices at SCI/Reno this year for2004 ZIM buffalo/plains game hunts were 10 days at $700 to $850 per day plus $2K trophy fee on buff plus standard plains game trophy fees. Specially sought after plains game like eland had to be reserved.

You should be very cautious about who you do business with in Zim nowadays. It still has good hunting areas, but a lot of it has now been taken over by the floppies. If you do book a Zim hunt you need to make sure you book with an old established company there.
......If you're planning to hunt there in 2005 and beyond you should be even more cautious.
