10.75x68 muzzle diameter

What did the muzzle diameter Mauser Type A rifles in 10.75x68 & 9.3x62 run?

Could those of you with Type A rifles in 10.75x68 and or 9.3x62 measure the muzzle just
before or just past the front sight band and post them?

It would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Allen

According to the Mauser factory specs. for Type A barrels, the contour was the same for all calibers from .250 to .404. with a barrel length of 600mm (23.6"). The muzzel should measure .575/.563 dia. My Type A in 7x57 is fitted with a front sight ring base available on Type A's which adds to that dia. The sight ring measures .625 dia. and should be the same on the other calibers.

Thanks Dons,

We are getting together all the components to build a replica of a Mauser Type A in 9.3x62. Like Osa Johnson's rifle that
Bob Faucett has and graciously posted pics of here.

Lothar Walther has a barrel contour #5130 that is supposed to be an exact copy of a Mauser Type A in 404 Jeffery.

They list a muzzle diameter of .625" on 26" long barrel.

Contour #5130: Mauser Type E Sporter (for type A rifles)

ØD1 = 0.625"
ØD2 = 0.800"
ØD3 = 0.865"
ØD4 = 0.923"
ØD5 = 1.200"
L1 = 2.00"
L2 = 2.79"
L3 = 3.79"
L4 = 6.49"
L5 = 26" LW contour # 5130

I couldn't get the barrel drawing to past so here's the link:

LW contour # 5130

I have been going back and forth a bit between a 10.75x68 built on a 1909 Argentine or a 404 Jeffery on a GMA Standard Magnum Single Square Bridge Action, to stay as close to true to the Mauser Type A. I guess the 404 Jeffery would be a 404 Eley according to the 1930 Mauser catalog reprint I have.

So, I guess I need some help and guidance on the proper barrel contour for a Type A Mauser in 9.3x62 and 404 Jeffery.

Any help would much appreciated!

We want to build them as period correct as possible.

Cheers, Allen

PS, If I go with the 404 Jeffery on GMA action (the most likely option) it will have a flag safety, mil trigger and bolt handle like a Type A, not the GMA bolt handle.

Mauser "Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles" pg 124 has a copy of factory drawing No 10098 dated 28 August, 1924 of the 600mm version of the concentric Lauf Type "E" (English type barrel).

What about the 404 on the Argentine? That is a nice combination.

I applaud your dedication to historical authenticity. That's the view/affliction I have in rifle building too. I don't even like modern scopes!

I believe the LW barrel would be excellent as it is. For a 404 I can't imagine I'd want to make the barrel any lighter than .625 at the muzzle, even if the original was a tad lighter, but that's just me. Will you be trying to reproduce the contour precisely in every dimension?

Another interesting thing about the LW barrel is the straight section in front of the radius at the breech - very handy for mounting the sight base/recoil lug fittings Recknagel sells, but did the original rifle have that feature? It's .865 in diameter, and several of the Recknagel lug/sight base fittings are .866 inner diameter. Obviously they're meant to be together.

On my FN built 404 the muzzle measures .707" just forward of the front sight.

On my Husqvarna 9.3 x 62 the muzzle measures .626 at that point.

I only wish they were Type A mausers.
