From Sabatti we site:

Side by side hammerless double-barrel shotgun with an improved version of the Anson Deeley action-mechanism.
The barrels are made out of a chromium-molybdenum solid steel bar. Once drilled, bored and rectified, they are inserted in the monoblock and welded using a silver alloy at medium temperature. The inner-side of the barrels is honed and chromed.
The action-receiver is forged and milled from a solid block of high-strength steel. After engraving, it undergoes a heat-treatment to achieve surface hardening.
Pistol grip stock in selected walnut, or English style available upon request.
A gold plated single trigger is fitted in the model Saba Mon.

If you prefer, you could mill down the "SABATTI" name on the bottom and replace it with "RIGBY". That may make you feel better!

All kidding aside, even if regulation isn't spot-on, this is a lot of gun (and fun) for the money.
IMO, this could be a similar situation to the old days when the Italians started making Sharps, Remingtons, Colts etc. Many buyers were dubious of their quality then, and some were rather crappy, but some makers such as Pedersoli have continued to put out great products at very realistic prices.
Lets hope the Sabatti starts such a trend in the world of double rifles.

When merkel started making "cheap" big bores, many said they were crap, and some still do.

I know it is kinda going against the grain here and at Accurate Reloading, but I am disappointed in the lack of the previously-advertised Sabatti in 45/70. There are those of us out there that have no real need for a DG stopper but do need a cartridge good for most US game AND is cheap to shoot. Cheap ammo = more shooting practice. More practice = higher success rate. And higher success rate = more jerky.

I own a Remington Baikal 45/70. It is what it is, a good solid Soviet Ziv. Now, a Sabatti isn't a Ferrari but a Fiat is better than a Ziv.

Tom

I build more 45-70's than any other cartridge. People just love them, including me!

Is this Tom O.?

No, not Tom O. That's why I'm Sgt. Brown. I do know Tom from the gunshow circuit, however.

The suggestions on downloading larger calibers, etc., are well founded... IF you can reload. For various reasons I cannot. Factory ammo only. Considering the factory price for loaded big bore ammo, the darned rifle would just sit except for special occasions. I want a shooter, not a rifle I cannot afford to shoot all I want. And the only buffalo I am ever going to see are on a friend's bison farm.

It sure does.

The .375 gr heat treated ,475 Linebaugh lead solid at 2150 fps is pretty much a NFB, at least it was in my .470 NE.

That is a semi beaver tail mate.

It's not too bad though.

I personally love Merkels, tough as shit. I also like old English Hammer guns too. And since we're just talking, the Blaser is the fuglyist gun I've ever laid hand to.

If the weather clears I'll try and fly up to Cabela's this weekend and take a look at them. It's a 40 minute hop in the ole' Bonanza.

the one i saw at the shot show had nice walnut, metal to wood fit was rather well done .engraving adequate. now it was a 45 70 and felt well balanced like a cross between a 28 gauge and a 20 gauge.but thats all they had to compare.i cant wait till my order gets a chance to be filled and orders they have stacks and stacks people want them and are lining up.their will be more of our clan the people who dreamed of days gone by the glory days when africa was more than game farms and parks, yea i know there are still wild places but not like the days when the british empire ruled.dont you feel the romance when you hold your double its more than steel and wood its a dream.most of these guns will never see africa but a person can dream.read the head lines lion hunting is on the verge of ending elephant not far behind.hunt for black rhino yea right .this may be all we have left.you say no that wont happen.try to book a polar bear hunt or a tiger hunt.both took place in our life time and are gone.but a double keeps the dream alive to me.maybe just maybe someday
