Need advice on who to go to.

I have a 1926 takedown Mauser in 318 accelerated express that is in need of lots of help. Here's what I'd like to do.
1. Have the engraving redone
2. It needs reblueing so the metal needs to be sorted first.
3. It needs a new front sling eye made.
4. Bolt peep installed.
5. Action case colored as original.
6. Restocked with my wood in the classic 1920's English sporter style.

I have an engraver in mind, I need suggestions on who to do the rest of the work. I gave it to my gunsmith over 14 months ago and got fed up waiting for him to begin so I picked it up today. I don't mind a resonable waiting period just some progress should be made.

You might want to consider Griffin & Howe. They can rust blue the metalwork and take care of the swivel issue, etc. They can also refinish the existing stock and recut the checkering, which will save you a bundle over the cost of restocking..and..preserve some of the originality. I personally prefer their work to the 'turnbull look', particularly on a rifle like this.

Thanks Mckinney. The stock is trashed. Broken through the wrist and the butt has been worn/sanded down way too much to save.

Hi Grenadier,

Who says "you can't make a silk purse from a sows ear" these guys would run very close to doing it. I have seen old rifles restocked or junked over the years that were in better condition to those displayed. They are really true tradesmen but what sort of trade would you call it... I would say it was almost a "magician" as most would see some of them as kindling wood and not a beautiful stock...

A plug for a good friend of mine Dave Norin who has worked on many restoration projects and who is an ACCG member and editor of the ACGG magazine.

Whoever you choose to work with, you must post pictures of the restoration process here and show her off. What a beautiful rifle! Soon she will be as glorious as she was when she was made!

I agree. I recommended G&H in an earlier post because they have done some amazing stuff for me, but I wouldn't hesitate to use stockfixrs either. I've talked to the owner several times and it is always a pleasure. I have an old Oberndorf Type B in 9.3x62 with a battered stock and will probably send it to him. Only issue is the waiting time - currently about 10 months according to my last conversation with him.

I've used him before with good results but this stock is dead. Besides I have some wood just sitting around waiting to be made into something I can enjoy.

Mike McCabe at http://www.mccabeguns.com/mccabegallery.html is very adept at pantographing original stocks and building them up into restored rifles. He understands the aesthetics of these things and as you can see his work is very good. He's not just a stock duplicator.

I second the fine work of Mike McCabe, but he uses a neighbor who retired from TSJC to cut his wood.
They turn out beautiful however they start out.

And I have to say, that is one sexy and adorable rifle. My hat's off to you for lovingly restoring it back to it's original glory. Bravo. I'm now craving just such a rifle. Too many guns in this condition get broken down for parts - the barrel alone is valuable - and not restored as they should be.
