Weight of DR shot gun conversion
      #147083 - 03/12/09 02:04 AM

First I would like to thank whoever started this forum ,it's great, wish I had found it years ago.

I am planning on building a DR on a 16ga Sauer action, cal. to be 9.3x74.
My question is what weight can I expect from the finished rifle?
I would like to end up with a rifle around 8 lbs.
How thin coulld I turn the barrels at the muzzel?

I built a 450-400 DR on a Merkel action and it weighs over 11 lbs., altough it is an easy rifle
to shoot it was just to heavy last deer season.

Any ideas?

thanks Dale

Go to Lother Walther's web site (in Germany not the US importer) and they have the profiles for double 9.3 barrels there. it will give you accepted minimum dimensions.

BUY THEM!!!! You'll have better luck from Lothar Walther than trying to get a US manufacturer to contour that caliber of barrel that small. I've talked to all of the major suppliers and none of them will do it. A #3 contour is as small as they will go! That means your gun will weigh between 11- 13 pounds in all likelihood. I'm still looking though.

I'll second what Bramble suggested, have a look at Lothar Walther barrels and profiles.

I used a pair of the said Lothar Walther barrels when I built my first double, a 9,3x74. They have a muzzle diameter of .531". I made the action and all though, and didn't use a shotgun action. The rifle balances beautifully, with the weight concentrated between the hands, and it weighs in at a delightful 8 lbs neat. It is a joy to carry.

If it helps, I posted this article about it here a little while ago

The Walther barrels on my 9.3 double shoot well too. Individual barrel groups of three shots into 1 inch at 75 yards over open express sights are common. Composite groups of 6 shots (three right lefts) at that range hover around the 1-3/4 to 2 inch mark when I can see the target clearly - my eyes are not as sharp as they used to be

Go for Walther barrels if you can, you won't be sorry. Ready made to the right profile and weight, and good shooters too!

Best

Alex
