What do you think of Clark Custom's Double Rifle Conversion?
      #146854 - 28/11/09 10:55 AM

Just wondering what everyone thinks of Jim Clark's double rifle conversions? These conversions are done on CZ SxS shotgun actions. Originally he just offered a 405 Winchester, but now you can go as big as a 500 NE. Here is a link to his site http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/DblRifle.html. Here also is a link to a video on Guns & Gear with Tom Gresham were they are shooting the double http://www.guntalk.tv/gtv/library.php?category=54&video_id= 396. Jim states he handloaded the 405 Winchester with a 400gr bullet at 2150fps; the Hodgdon Manual lists Max. at 1945fps. What do you think?

Doesn't the Hodgdon Manual list 1945fps because of some of the old guns that are chambered for 405 Win ?

ie like the + P ammo that came out for modern guns in old calibres so it was easily differentiated ?

Starting @ $ 5000 ???

I could think of better things to spend $5000 in a modern made DR in a modern calibre.

Oh, and if you are going to put a test target next to a gun
to extol the virtues of the firearms you make, then the least you could do is have the shots side by side !!!

Perhaps the target was tilting

Looks like NO effort was made to blend the barrel and monoblock. The lack of attention to detail here makes you wonder about the rest of the rifle...
This type of thing perpetuates the lack of understanding most of the shooting public has about double rifles. When they discuss the "cost" of double rifles, this leads one to think that using shotgun actions is standard practice. Of course, if all builders used the "one action fits all" method, they would cost less. There are good reasons why traditional makers don't do this.
I suspect the hot 405Win loads are maxing out the 20ga. action's strength too.
They should send one to London to see if it can pass proof.

Ronvella could teach these guys a thing or two about the proper method of rebarreling a shotgun as a double rifle.

What's with the rear sight?

It looks like it was plucked off a Remington 700 and then "blended" into a longer ramp.

And then stuck to close to the eye.

I think the Baikals have this one beat.

Just a few observations:

The quarter rib is not, and why does it ramp up like that? Rear sight is way to close, should be at least 7" from the breech. He should have followed the original profiles on the barrels at least. And the choice of a base action stinks, no pistol grip? This is a CZ Bobwhite, which is based on the Huglu 202B which does have a pistol grip. The action is strong enough, I've proofed them to stupid pressures, so no faults there.

I'm sure he put a lot of time into these guns, but I think he needs to go back to the design board on some of the basics; barrel profiles, quarter rib, sights, stock. I'm sure with practice and refinement he'll have a fine gun, but, I don't think they are ready for prime time yet.

I've used the 202B with the original mono-block, and found that I had to mill the center of the block to fit a quarter rib. I then hand shaped the rib, from 3/8" stock, to the barrels, a very tedious job and one he seems unwilling to do. Hence the goofy jacked up rib/sight. IMHO

If it were a regular guy at home doing his own build, I'd say nice job. But a custom rifle from a professional shop? If he were to take the few critiques offered in this thread, he might have something.

I agree! Infact that is an understatement! That thing looks like it would handle like a fence post, and the joint between the barrel butts, and the barrels looks to have been done on a bench grinder! Why would anyone pay $5K up for a straight stock shotgun conversion, when he can buy a real double rifle for as little as a couple thousand more!
