Came across an interesting old double in India. A 475 NE calibrated for 480 grains bullet with 85 grains of Cordite. It is a box lock bearing the markings of Alfred Field and Co. The rifle couldnt have been fired much because 475 ammo is hard to get in India but surprizingly the barrel shows shallow grooves. Alfred Feild does not seem to be a regular manufacturer either. Could the experts help ?

Probably the 475 No.2 .483" regulated for 480 gn bullet.
(as opposed to the (475 No.2 Jeffery .488" which was regulated for a 500gn bullet).

As you said, one of the rarer calibres.

Re the shallow grooves, some of my guns have very shallow rifling and it's not from shooting them !!!

It seems different makers had different depth of rifling.

Agree - .475 No 2 was originally a 480gr bullet and 85gr cordite load;
Jefferey .475NE N0 2 was a 500gr bullet and 80gr cordite load;
and the .457NE was a 480gr bullet and 75gr cordite load.
Would be wise to slug the bore though as I have read that the 475NE can run from .474 to .483 inches - probable also that the other 2 have varying bore sizes?

Thanks guys. What about the manufacturer Alfred Field?? I did an internet search and it appears they were Birmingham based Knife manufacturers? Is shallow rifiling ok for accuracy??

Shikari,

Could have been a maker, could also has just stuck his name on a gun.

Without pictures, it would be hard to tell.

With pictures, one of us (most likely 400 Nitro Express)
would be able to say what type of action it was and who possibly made it.

Proof marks would be good as well as any other numbers and letters on the barrel.

Any chance of getting any of this ?
