.264 Win Mag + Buck...finally...!
      #146722 - 26/11/09 09:41 AM

Finally got him!

Took a month of hard hunting. Haven't seen this guy for about three weeks.

I was getting a bit frustrated but with some snow on the ground yesterday, I made a long hike and found big track in a new hiding place so this morn I was up long before light and made a pull up the 70 degree slope to loop around behind the fir patch where I believed him to be hiding. I was so lathered up in my flannels and Filson double Mackinaw that at the top of the steep bit I stripped off coat and shirts and dropped trow and undies to my ankles and stood stark raving naked with Willy dangling in the blowing frigid mountain air till the sweat blew dry, then suited up and tippy-toed silent to an old Blitz Blind {I have them all over the mountains here} I had dug in the thick stuff about 4 years ago. It was semi-covered by a blowdown but after a bit of trimming I had a nice hidden pocket to sit in.

That held for two hours till the melting snow soaked my coat. I was mulling over a location change when I heard the red squirrels blow up down the slope, and "timber tigers" scooted this way and that out at about 80 yards along the old overgrown elk trail.

Nothing showed, and then I realized something might have been sidehilling above the trail in the state strip. The wind was good so I decided to leave my spot and stalk back up the mountain to check a couple possible bedding areas. I had gone only 40 yards or so when I caught a glimpse of movement to my left, and there was Uncle Buck picking his way along parallel to me. I pivotted and brought the gun up and after waiting a split second for an open shoulder broke the trigger.

After a brief word of thanksgiving to the Creator, I started the drag. Giggling all the way!

Grüss Gott! My fellow hunter and a Weidmanns Heil is offered to you. I'm glad to see you honoring the traditional "Der Letzte Biss" as a thank you for the fortuitous hunt you were granted. That buck was given to you. As always, great story!

Waidmannsdank!

A couple more pix, along with the previously cantankerous, now 1'a'my'favorites Ruger Hawkeye in .264 Win Mag.

Way to go, 9.3. I take it he was angled away from you a bit at the shot.

Daryl, actually, angled toward me a bit. Shot took him from the right side just behind the right upper leg/shoulder and angled out to the exit that can be seen in the second pic above. Strike spot left a big clump of blood and minced lung here. I knew when I broke the trigger he was done even tho he barely broke stride and kept walking.

The reason I knew of an angled shot was of course, the exit appears to be right at the rear of the diaphram. It had to be one or the other, facing-on or facing-away. The last deer I shot with the #1 in 7x57, with a 173gr. Blue Nose at 2,500fps mv, made an entrance hole in the hide of 1", a 2 1/2" x 3" hole in the on-side rib cage, 3" hole through both lungs, smashed the offside shoulder, then the rear of the bullet made an exit 1/4" wide x 1/2" long with no blood on the outside of the hide, except for the larger entrance hole, looking just like your exit. Obviously, the old Blue Nose 173 was not designed for impact at near 2,500fps, but those long slim bullets still worked.

The more I shoot this rifle/cartridge the more I like it.

All the criticism I heard about the .264 has turned out to be basically...wrong.

I was skeptical about the caliber until my buddy kept twisting my arm about it {he owns 3}, and then we used his rifle to test the bullets in the Boards and Jugs and I was impressed.

I've always like Remington Core-Lokts and these didn't disappoint.

I failed to photo the carcass on this one, but the "in" hole was about 1 inch in diameter and the "out" about 2. A rib shattered going in and two ribs shattered going out, and the lungs were pulped. Very little bloodshot meat and the loss was only a few ounces. On similar shots with the .270 and PMP 130 grain bullets, the sides would have been heavily bloodshot. At 50 yards, the bullet is still clipping over 2900 fps.

On the whole, I like the Hawkeye, too, except that the skinnier forearm is giving me a challenge for making a side sling. The old MKII's had the thicker forestock and were easier to modify.

Gotta get a wolf with this thing. A friend just shot one a couple miles from the house here, from a treestand.

Congratulations 9.3x57, a great story of patience with a positive outcome. I must admit that your statement:

"I was so lathered up in my flannels and Filson double Mackinaw that at the top of the steep bit I stripped off coat and shirts and dropped trow and undies to my ankles and stood stark raving naked with Willy dangling in the blowing frigid mountain air till the sweat blew dry."

Now that would have made a good photo to add to the flavour of the story....

Again congratulations,

Cheers from Australia,

Jeff Gray

Thanks very much.

You will be glad to know there are no known photos of Frosty Willy.

Thanks goodness this is a family forum...

Congratulations 9.3x57 on an icy outstanding adventure with Uncle Buck and your soon to be renown .264. What a great story writer you are and with the patience of Job, too.

So, how far was the shot and how much did the buck weigh in? It sounds like you were on the backside of nowhere up on top. Tell me that the drag was mostly downhill. Did Sonny and the 4x4 give you a hand or did you have to muscle him out all the way. I bet you got lathered up on the return trip!

Your Thanksgiving will continue this winter! This is my favorite:

SONNY MARSH VENISON KABOB

1 ½ to 2 lbs venison backstrap or other tender cuts
1 lb fresh whole mushrooms
2 lg Vidalia onions
2-3 green peppers
2-3 fresh tomatoes

To prepare marinade:

Mix ingredients of Good Season Italian salad dressing in a cruet.

Add one tsp Italian seasoning to the dressing and shake well.

Cut venison into 2 inch pieces, place in a covered bowl and mix with ½ the marinade 24 hrs before cooking.

Leave in refrigerator and turn meat 3 or 4 times during the 24 hrs.

Thread pieces of meat and veggies on skewers. Brush on or pour the rest of the marinade on kabobs. Season with fresh ground pepper and garlic powder to taste.

Cook on grill, 10 min on each side.

Serve with rice pilaf or potatoes.

Incredible!

David picks his up from the processor Monday so we missed out on some venison for our feast on Thursday. Save me some tenderloin. I'm going for my buck this afternoon.

I've loaded for two, one was an "Alpine", a Parker Hale take-off back in the mid 70's, as well as a Model 70 in early 2000. The first had trouble, difficulty with it's chamber or barrel as no factory ammo could be used. Being a handloader, I helped the owner with handloads, but found nothing in the books, not even starting loads were suitable, and ended up with a safe maximum load using IMR4895 and IMR4064, with 3gr. less than the listed starting loads. The bore, groove diameter and chamber all mic'd out correctly - couldn't figure it out- very much like your first Ruger.

The one I owned in early 2000, a used gun built in the 1980's, had a 24" bl. but was a slow barrel. At maximum loads, the best it would do is 3,350fps with a 120 gr. "XLC", and about 2,860fps with 140's.

I built a .260 CLC (necked down 7x57 with the same front end profile as a .260 Rem) which had a 60gr. capacity. With top end loads using RE#19, it ran 3,308fps with the 120 XLC, only 42fps less than my 'high falutin' .264 WM in Mag, but the .260 CLC did it with only 52gr. of powder, compared to the .264's requisite 85gr. of powder. 33gr. less powder for the .260 CLC and only 42fps slower. With 140's the CLS was good for 3,100fps, a full 260fps faster than my .264. I wasn't happey with the .264.

It's no wonder I rebarreled it, threw away it's tube and chambeered the new one for the .458 Alaskan. It's 350gr. bullets were only 200fps slower than my .264 Win Mag would do with a 160 - I found that interesting.

BTW - I can't think of a better use of a rapid expanding 120 or 100gr. than from the .264, piling into a wolf - just about anywhere will do.

I haven't been on this forum in a while so on my return and reading through posts this one and you elk made my day. I am a long time fan of the .264. I have taken somewhere around 100 deer with that cartridge. I currently own two of them. One is a custom Encore with a 26" tube. The other is a 700BDL with a 24" tube. The Encore wears a V-Tac and the Remmy wears a Unertl 10x. I use the Encore crop sniping. It has been awsome. Most of my shots in the beans are over 300 yards with a good many over 400 yards. My longest deer kill was 620 yards. reflex264
