A request for a gunsmith ready double rifle action
      #146557 - 24/11/09 11:05 AM

Lately I have noticed more custom rifle actions out in the market place. The most recent that I have noticed is American Gun Company http://www.americangunllc.com/. The are currently making 1885 High Wall actions and are developing Controlled round feed, Push feed, Magnum Mauser, and several other actions. This company is an off shoot of McGowen barrels http://www.mcgowenbarrel.com/. I sent them an email requesting that they seriously look into building a double rifle action for gunsmiths. I asked for an Anson & Deeley boxlock with Greener crossbolt, possibly two sizes for medium to large N.E. cartridges. This action more than likely would be investment cast, but would be properly heat treated and modern CNC machined. They could supply the monoblock ready to go and you just need barrels, ribs, sights, etc. They already stock their 1885 High Wall, why not the double too. Let me know what you think or write AGC and request the same.

This would be a neat alternative to have around.

IIRC Tom Ondrus has european recievers and barrel sets already. There's still alot of work to be done.

I saw this thread, but Tom only has double actions for calbiers up to 9.3mm. I feel that a company like American Gun Company that machines there own actions, but outsources the casting maybe able to do it at less cost. They also can make an action for those who want true big bore N.E. cartridges. There 1885 High Wall kit with barrel and wood is reasonably priced. While you would still need barrels, machining, regulation, sights, etc. you would have a true modern double action at less cost than a new Searcy double, possbily even less than a Clark Custom Conversion http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/DblRifle.html. J.J. Perodeau http://www.champlinarms.com/Default.aspx?tabid=28 will regulate for $600.00 and there are others out there that will do the same, Todd Ramirez http://www.customgun.com/Double_Rifles.html. Just a thought, let me know if I am dreaming.

A cast DR action is not a good idea as the grain structure of the metal is all wrong at the root of the action (Junction with watertable and standing breech).

Trade actions are availible (not at the cost you mentioned however). They are not sold to the public as the makers would have no control over their assembled quallity and may be held legaly responsible if somebody injures themselves.

I have no idea what Mr Perodeau charges, however if we take your figure of $600 I would imagine that it is for re-regulating an already completed rifle. It cannot be for regulating , laying ribs ect on a new in the white gun as he would be substantially better off working for MacDonalds at the hourly rate that would represent.

Regards

Crype's save us from the $600.00 double rifle. I can't buy a decent barrel blank for that cost.

Piotti offer sidelock DR actions alone in in europe. Not sure if they ship to the USA. You could check with William Larkin Moore,m their agents. Also either Recknageel or Triebel used to offer sidelock DR actions. Both are very decent people to talk to and a phone call would get you a source of supply.

Good hunting!
