.375 H&H on SC whitetail
      #145991 - 16/11/09 06:09 AM

Last year I bought a sweet LH .264 WM R700 so I could free up my 7mm to be converted to a LH .375 H&H R700. This summer after 6 months I got it back and it's perfect, and for only about $600. I have it set up with a 1.25X4 Swarovsky.

This weekend my brother (from CO) and I went on a one day guided hunt in Ravanel SC. I let him carry my .264 and me the .375.

I bagged a small 80-100 lbs buck at 110 yards with a 235 grain Hornady. I literally flatten that deer. The wound channel was huge.

So, there you go. A .375 H&H is NOT too much gun for deer. In fact the guide said, I hate having to chase a wounded deer.

I wish you would bring that .375 (or .264) over here to Tennessee and help me with my surplus deer population. One whole field of my soybeans was turned into a feedlot by the deer, and a bunch of them have to go. Limit: three per day, with a limit of three bucks per year. Rifle season starts on the 21st of November and extends to December 6, the reopens December 19 to January 10.

Yeah, the .375 will sure kill deer! Have used that bullet myself on whitetails in Washington State and Kentucky.

Bill, I wish we lived closer. I'd be happy to do the job.

We are seeing a precipitous decline in all hoofed game. Couple hard winters + wolves means the future looks pretty grim for a long way out.

Surely you must be able to get a "wildlife pest destruction permit" as we do here for `roo`s in our crops?

Or is that not on for you guys?

There is such a thing and I considered it, but the deer have to be left where they fall. I can't bring myself to do that. We have a long list of families who want and need the venison, and we try to keep them provided for. Last year, we took about 20 off my 570 acres.

XAUSA,

I have a lot of vacation to burn. What do you do with the deer? Butcher them yourself or send them off? Who pays for it? I have plenty of meat and would like to help out the families. I reckon I'd need an out of state license.

G'Day Fella's,

Yes Bonanza, I'm a firm believer that Everybody should have at least one .375 H & H Mag!!!

In my experience, the .235gr Speer Semi-Pointed work just a well on smaller game as the 225gr Hornady.
What sold me on them was a good mate of mine "Tull" and I were out doing some Big Bore Varminting one day when a Kangaroo presented itself. Tull being the exceeding good all-round shot that he is, hit this Skippy in the chest at around 200meters.
On contact, there was a spray of red mist and skippy was thrown to the ground. When we arrived on the scene a couple of minutes later, there a couple of meters behind the carcass, on the ground in a sea of Red Grass, was skippys heart still beating/twitching!
The wound Channel was more like a Window! It was huge!!!

Yes Everybody should have at least one .375 H & H Magnum!!!

Did I say Hornady? I meant Speer 235.

The exit wound was 2" in diameter.

I got him right in the boiler room. Instant kill.

We just turn the field dressed carcasses over to the families and let them make up their mind where to go from there. We have a wealth of processors in the area, as you might imagine. Our estimated deer herd in the county (ca. 900 square miles) is 20,000. My guess is that it's closer to 30,000. Our county has ranked first or second in deer harvest for the last five years.

Incidentally, deer were reintroduced to our county exactly 50 years ago. Until then, the deer herd was nil.

I hunt deer & antelope with mine. The Speer 270 gr. BTSP works quite nicely.

Way to go Bonanaza - I've a buddy up here who has used the 235gr. Speers on moose from a 9.5x68 that I chambered up for him from a .375/06IMP. At 3,100fps, they worked well on moose at 200 to 300yards. He has a pill bottle full of recovered 235's, that look picture-perfect. Every one ended up under the hide on the off side. No bones hit other than ribs. No moose needed a second shot.

In this day and age of premium bullets, we tend to overlook old-style bullets that work well indeed.

The 235, if sized down to fit a 9.3, worked very well in 9.3's, test material when driven at 2,400fps with point blank impacts. It's a great bullet at those speeds, and apparently, at the residual speed between 200 and 300 yards when started at 3,100fps.

I just checked the residual speeds of these loads and they run 2,300fps to 2,500fps, which stands to reason why they worked so well.

I think my 235 loads are only about 2500 fps, which is plenty fast.

Well heck, Bonanza, I don't guess they can travel very far when hit in the spine!!!

BTW, what's in the tippy cup? Hope some good Bourbon!

Congrats on the shot.

I put down a Colorado elk with a .375 loaded with 235 Speers back in 1987. It makes a great load and really will reach out and touch someone.

Best,
Curl

P.S.

When you gonna shoot one with your .577 BPE? I want to see that report.

I already did a number with my .450 BPE.

You bet, the doubles are ready for some action.

Like WyoJoe, I tend to favor the 270 gr. BTSP for most of the NA animals. I have found that the meat damage is also minimal. (trim to the hole)

I used the .375 Ruger for all my plains game in Zimbabwe. I intend to use it for hogs and deer here in Kentucky and Tennessee as well. I use the 300 grain A-Frame with Reloader.
