Sleeved / lined barrels - this OK?
      #145923 - 15/11/09 08:48 AM

I recently picked up another Farquharson - bit of a project.
It is a plain finish no-name gun with a serial number in the 16000 range - the number is stamped just in front of the lever hinge - I haven't seen any others stamped here. It is done in the Rigby style.
My major concern is that the chambering is something like a 9X57R - that is what it was described as - but none of my X57R brass will chamber. Looks like the base diameter of my cases is a larger diameter than the chamber. I did a chamber cast and it measures out a bit longer than the 9X57 should too.
The rub is: the barrel looks like it may actually be lined to the .358" groove diameter.
My hope was that it is chambered in the 400/350Rigby but it isn't - chambers are too short.
So, my question here is, would it be safe to rechamber the gun to the 400/350 to make use of the already .358" barrel and of course to keep it in a British chambering.
If not, I plan on rebarreling it to the 400/350 and using the barrel band sling swivel as well as the front and rear sights.

Do you have John Donnellys book, 'Handloaders Manual of Cartridge Conversions'? It'll show just about every cartridge ever made and the measurements. If not post all the measurements and I'll try to look it up.

Or try to look it up here. This is fairly good.

Hi Huvius,

If you have trouble getting the book, have a look at: www.ammoguide.com they have all the known cartridges, sizes, some verified by SAAMI, and a section that will show you what is available to you if you wish to re barrel / re bore based on what you have size wise. A good site overall,

Cheers,

Maybe I should have said "lined" rather than sleeved.

I'm not really too concerned with the current chambering, I just was thinking that I could rechamber it to 400/350 if it would be safe.
IMO, the dimensional differences between what it is now and the 350 are not much so likely would be OK.
I was also wondering if there are any particular limits on a lined barrel as far as velocities and pressures go.

It could be that what you have is a .35 Winchester, a round introduced in 1903 for the Model 95 Winchester lever action. The .35 Whelen was an attempt to create a rimless version of the .35 Winchester.

Dimensions:
Case length 2.415
Loaded length 3.16
Head diameter .461
Rim Diameter .543
Neck diameter .383
Shoulder diameter .428
Case capacity (grains of water) 68.74

This compares with the case capacity of the 9X57R (62.22); .35 Whelen (72.63); .400/.350 (78.73).

Factory load for the .35 Winchester: 250 grain bullet at 2195 fps at 45,000 psi.

50 grains of 3031 produces 2300 fps with a 250 grain bullet in the .400/.350.

Shot in a Farquharson, the .35 Winchester should match the performance of the .400/.350.

Cases can be formed from .405 Winchester brass.

I have a H&H .35 Winchester double rifle. I operates slightly lower pressure than the Whelen.

I dropped a 35 Winchester shell in and it just about made it.
Seems the case shoulder is further forward than the chamber although the rim fits exactly when I put the shell in backwards.
I also compared the 35WCF base diameter to a 8X57JR and it is a bit smaller - looks like the right base diameter for my chamber.
At this point I am inclined to go the rebarrel route... probably to 400/350 Rigby.
