I picked up a pre-World War 1 Oberndorf Type B in 8x57 recently (photo links below), which would be a very nice piece if not for the recoil pad which looks like a fairly recent addition. I could use some advice on a couple of matters....
Do the scope mount bases look factory original and are rings for these mounts available?
What would you you do about the recoil pad? It looks like the stock has been cut, so adding a reproduction Mauser buttplate is probably not an option. How about replacing the ventilated pad with a thinner Silvers type sculpted pad, or a leather covered Purdey style pad? The rifle is in great shape with a perfect bore and is probably as nice as anything I have - hate to leave that ghastly ventilated pad on it.
many thanks

Nice looking early Type B. If the butt has been cut, it isn't by much. Depending on LOP, I would first consider a repro Mauser buttplate. A Silvers pad would be a second option. The vent pad has to go. The scope bases are definitely not factory but probably period. I never saw a rear base quite like this one and don't know where you will find a mount to fit. Are there British proofs anywhere?

It does have British proofs (see attached).
Looks like I'll have to go with a silvers pad. The LOP measured from the front trigger is 14 1/4" with the pad, 13 1/2" without. I think 14 1/4" is the standard LOP for the Type B.
No idea on the scope mount - hopefully someone on the forum will recognize it. Whoever installed it did a very neat job removing wood to accommodate the release lever on the rear base.
I now have two early Type B's with sight issues - a 7x57 which needs a Lyman 35, and now this one.

The reason I asked about the British proofs is that the rear scope base appears to be of British design. It's safe to say it's not German. Now you can narrow your search in that direction. Be patient regarding the Lyman 35, one will show up. The factory spec on the Type B LOP = 14.4" Good luck with the search.

Yeah, after further research, I agree. I wonder if the base was added by a British retailer or done later by a gunsmith? The workmanship around the rear release lever is of good quality. There are no British retailer marks on the rifle that I saw, but will have another look. I suppose another possibility is that the Mauser factory could have added the British style bases as a special order item?
I've contacted New England Custom Guns to see if they can help with the mount on this rifle and also the Lyman 35 issue on my 7x57.
Trouble with the scope mount is I wouldn't recognize the correct original mount if I saw it.
thanks
