Simson and Suhl question.
      #145532 - 10/11/09 07:13 AM

Gentlemen,

I would like to take my Simson and Suhl combo gun out for deer this season. But, I do not know wether to buy .318 or .323 Mauser ammo for it. It is marked 7.9x57 no JR or JRS markings. What should I do? I don't think the markings will show up on a camera. It's serial number is 34445 if anyone has a Suhl book to look it up. Thanks guys.

The date codes will probably give an indication but slugging the barrel and measuring is the best way.

Your gunsmith should be able to make a cast of the bore at the muzzle, using Cerrosafe, a metal which melts at the boiling point of water and shrinks slightly after hardening, then expands to the true dimension after cooling.

Crude, but efficient: if you can find some 8X57JR ammunition (.318" bullets), fire a round and then try to slip a .323" bullet in the mouth of the fired case. If it won't go in, you have a JR, if it will, it's a JRS. A .318" bullet will probably keyhole, if fired in an "S" bore barrel. Conversely, a round of 8X57 JRS will probably not chamber in a .318" barrelled weapon.

Neck clearance is the real problem. With sufficient neck clearance, I am satisfied you could shoot .323" diameter bullets in a .318" bore with no ill effects. Insufficient neck clearance may cause pressures to skyrocket and should be avoided like the plague in any caliber rifle.

Date codes are not reliable with repsect to bore size of the 8's. German sporting arms makers stuck to the J bore for a long time, in some cases decades, after the military converted to the S bore. Since this one is marked 7.9 rather than 7.8, I'd kinda expect it to be an S bore, but wouldn't fire it on a guess. It needs to be slugged.

I do not know how to post pics on this site, but here is the http link from photobucket.

It handles and points like a dream, I am going to take it to the gunsmith to see what length of 16 gauge shells to use. Thanks.

Looks like it did work. Also, does anyone know what a combo like that might be worth? I have no Idea when it comes to pricing combos. Thanks again.

Could I have to use 8x57R?

Do you see a rim recess in the breech of the barrel? I assume that this is a SXS 16 and 8mm? Not a drilling?
The length of the shotgun shell should be marked on the barrel, something like 16/65?

I just put in a non rimmed 8x57 Remington core-lokt round. It chambered fine but would not extract. I bet I need rimmed. Update:
there is a recess and it does have extractors on the rifle side. Ill have to break it down and check the gauge again.

Neat gun!

As 400 says, slug the bore.

Buy some teardrop-shaped, pure lead fishing weights and select one that is just slightly bigger than the bore, and run that thru with a brass rod. Get the brass rod from a machine shop or welding shop. A 1/4 inch rod works great. You can cut a short 1 inch long piece to get it started with a hammer from the muzzle if you like. Mike both land and groove depth so you know.

Your "drop test" pretty much tells you the thing wants rims.

I'm sure your rifle is not chambered for 8X57 Mauser, but a rimmed cartridge and my guess is it is a 8X57JRS (.323 bore) because of the stamping of 7.9, instead of 7.8 (.318 bore). The rimless Mauser ammo will not head space in a rifle chambered for the rimmed rounds. DO NOT SHOOT 8mm Mauser ammo in this rifle, till you find out for sure it is chambered for it, and I doubt it is.

This type of combination gun is properly called a "CAPE GUN"! A side-by-side rifle/shotgun with the rifle barrel usually on the right barrel. I would say that even not seeing this cape gun, the 7.9X57 normally indicates a 8X57JRS (.323 bore) but as 400 says you need to slug the barrel to make sure The 8X57 JRS, and the 8X57JR are both available from Sellier & Bellot , and both are rimmed cartridges. The 16 ga is the most common shot shell in Germany. If the shot barrel is chambered for the short shell, it is no problem opening it up the 2 3/4", and the choke in the shot barrel is historically full full choke, and needs be opened up to modified for modern shot-cup ammo. Most have the rifle sights cut for 196 gr rnd nose bullets.

I have a 16 Ga/8X57JR (.318 bore) cape gun, made by H. Berella of Berlin, Germany in about 1900. It is a side lock hammer gun with 26 inch barrels. This cape gun will place a 196 gr Norma soft point on the sights at 100 yds every time, and the shot barrel will place a Brenneke slug right beside that rifle bullet at 100 yds evry time, and with the shot barrel opened up for 2 3/4" , and modified choke, will take passing doves and fleeing quail with monotonous regularity.

The word Suhl is not a brand but the town where it was made in East Germany, the brand is Simpson! A sister to Merkel also made in Suhl. Your cape gun is worth the little trouble it takes to get set up to load for it, with a set of RCBS dies, and when opened up for American shot ammo will use good factory shot shells and Slugs. These guns are deer, elk, moose, and black bear guns, and the shot barrel will back the rifle barrel up with a slug, or shoot anything form clays to geese! Cape guns are a real hunter's gun!

.......................Enjoy

^^Sir,

Is there anyone who can open the bores up reliably with a fast turn around time? Thanks.

Mark I think he is asking about opening up the choke, and shot chamber to 2 3/4" chambers if they are not already done. The German shotguns are historicly super full choke, and don't work well with modern shotcup shot shells. My Berrella was opened up by GUN CRAFT in Hurst, Texas, but he has since ritired, and no longer works. Maybe you can give him the Briley Number there in Houston. I don't have any machine tools any longer and can't do the work, but it isn't a difficult mod to do, and only makes the cap gun more useful.

Pour some wax in the chamber and make a chamber cast. My vote is for 8X57R/360. They can be formed/necked down from 360 British Express. If the bore designation is encircled and otherwise isn't noted as being "70"mm either on the flats or on the extractor, it is a 65mm chamber.

Kind Regards,

Have you finalized what teh chambering is?

Is the shotgun side still in the original 2 inch chamber?
