Help,I need RWS ammo to check regulation on my dr
      #145337 - 07/11/09 05:10 PM

I purchased a used A. Zoli side by side DR that came with the regulation target. The rifle was regulated using an RWS H-Mantel bullet weighing 16.7 grams, (258 grains +-) and regulated at 100 metres. The bullet holes are touching. It looks like one big ragged hole.

When I looked up the data on the RWS bullet, the 16.7 gram bullet is purported to be doing approximately 2460 feet per second.

I am told that this rifle may have been manufactured in the 1970's and I believe the RWS ammo in 9.3 H-Mantel was a steel jacketed bullet.

I have decided to start at square one by getting my hands on a box of RWS H-Mantel factory-loaded ammo. If the rifle regulates using the factory rounds, I have a point to start at. If it does not, then I have to re-think my options regarding this dr.

The problem is no one in Alberta, Canada offer RWS ammo. Can someone help by sending me a box of RWS H-Mantel 16.7 gram ammo, or put me in touch with a company that sells the requested box of ammo? Of course I am more than happy to send you the funds to cover the purchase as well as shipping and handling.

Does RWS still manufacture the H-Mantel using a steel jacket? All I see on the net is copper jacketed bullets. Would the copper have a different effect on regulating the gun if it were regulated using a steel jacketed bullet?

Kindest regards,

Carpediem

I just had a look at the RWS/RUAG website and it seems that they still produce the H-Mantel bullet, although the big dealers here don`t offer the 9,3x74R load no more in their catalogues.
I could ask my gunsmith if he can get that ammo and send it to You but I know that it is a problem to send anything to Canada from Germany, mainly because it is not possible to insure the parcel, let alone the old problem with sending ammo.
Besides I believe that the H-Mantel bullet is a rather poor construction, its front part will disintegrate and result in heavy meat destruction. I would rather try to get the rifle regulated with more modern (and cheaper!) bullets.
If You want me to send the ammo to You, feel free to send me a PM.

With best regards

Kalunga

Why not try contacting Ellwood Epps in Orillia, Ontario? This is a wonderful old-style gunshop that carries an amazing assortment of relatively obscure ammo and other goodies, and if they don't have it in stock they will get it for you if possible. They do a lot of mail order business and are very fair and honest in their dealings. I make the 200-km roundtrip drive regularly and am rarely disappointed.

You may find it simpler to deal within Canuckistan rather than trying to import ammo from the U.S. or Europe. I tried that once and don't want to repeat the exercise.

Thank you Gentlemen for your assistance. I will try Elwood Epps first and see how that works.

Kalunga, I want a box of the factory ammo that was used to regulate the gun to see if the regulation is still on. Once I have established that, I will then try to build a load using more conventional bullets I can obtain here at home.

Can someone tell me if the H-Mantel is still produced using a steel jacket or is it now copper.

I must now take my leave. My wife and I are packing to leave on a ten day hunt for moose and deer.

See you in ten days.

Kindest regards,
