Shot the 405 Simson today.
      #145239 - 06/11/09 07:34 AM

I finally got around to shooting this one today. 50yd dead level horizontal but 12", yes 12" apart with Hornady ammo. 100yds was still dead on horizontal but about 20" apart. I see from the factory ads that both the Hornady and Winchester ammo use the 300 grain bullet at 2200 fps. As the photos show this gun is marked long range and has the sights to 500yds. Is it possible that the load for this rifle needs more velocity? That's the only way I know to get each barrel group closer. Anyone have any ideas?

What do the proof marks say? What velocity was the 300 grain actually producing?

Hello,

When you say the barrels were apart, I assume you mean R shot on the Right and L shot to the left at both distances ?
If your shots are crossing you may have to decrease velocity, did you measure velocity of this ammo out of your gun ?

It's proofed for the 300 grain bullet. No powder info. It is not crossing. I do not have access to a chrono.

A few observations, Mike.

Shooting dead level but that wide begs the question of what velocity did the Hornady ammo actually give? If it was way slow, then further experimentation with warmer handloads might be worthwhile. If it was 2100 to 2200 fps, the last thing you want to do is drive pressures way up trying to get rid of THAT much wide shooting.

I've gotten to the point that when I run across one this much out of regulation at normal velocity (again, we need chronograph results), I just don't waste much time screwing with 'em much anymore, because I know I'm not likely to get there within pressure limits. No vertical and only horizontal dispersion is easy to fix. It's the vertical dispersion that's a problem. If your ammo is producing standard velocity as corrected for barrel length with 300 grain, and making small individual barrel groups, you're set. Send it to J. J. Perodeau with the ammo and have it re-regulated. Last I heard he gets $600 for this service. He's re-regulated one for me and quite a number for friends with superb results. It's money well spent. You might find something through experimentation that works, but when they're that far out, it usually isn't worth the effort.

Chronograph yes!
You're lost in the mist without one here.

I'd also want to have a good look at the stock head to action fit, and the overall fitness of the wood at the head and through the wrist.
There might be gaps or cracks that you just don't see with the metal on the wood - which could give this kind of affect.

Cheers

Chronoed the 405 Hornady today. 2175-2230. Loaded some .410 250 grain cast WFNGC with 56 grains of 4895. Chronoed 2174-2253. Shot 4" low and 2" right but the composite groups were 1 1/2" apart at 50 yds. It started snowing really hard so only got to shoot about 6 of the cast loads. Will try again later.

I have chrono'd the hornady 405 ammo and its spot on their claims. I have a 405 double I'm building, however, I'm using the 400 grain .410 bullet at 1930FPS. Smoking cool load.

You have to jack that load up to about 2300 to 2350, I'd say 65 grains varget should do it.
